, CHARLES SCHERER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE REED &
BRAILLARD COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED CHATELAINE AND POCKET-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,217, dated May 8, 1900.
Application filed January 13, 1900. Serial No. 1,271. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES SOHERER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Chatelaine and Pocket-Book, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined chatelaine and pocket-book with the object in view of providing an article of that character which shall present a neat appearance when utilized as an ordinary pocket-book and also when used as a chatelaine-bag and one that may be quickly and easily adapted to one or the other of the two uses as may be desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the article as it appears when used as a chatelaine. Fig. 2 is arear View of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge or end view. Fig. 4 is an end View of the article as it appears when the chatelaine-hanger is detached. Fig. 5 is a view of the chatelaine-hanger in detail. Fig. 6 is a view of the purse or bag in elevation, partly in section, showing the front face of the back of the purse or bag at the point where the hanger is attached; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged view in detail, showing a fragment of the bag and its hanger in section from front to rear in the plane of one of the fastenings.
The pocket-book, which may also form the chatelaine-bag, exclusive of its back flaps, to which the chatelaine-hanger is removably secured, may be of any well-known or approved form, the preferred form being that shown in the accompanying drawings, in which a front flap A, provided on its under side with a pocket a, is arranged to fold over an inner pocket 13, the mouth of which is closed by means of a metallic frame F), provided with a clasp of any well-known or approved form. (Not shown.) The flap A extends downwardly at the back of the inner pocket B and is attached to the rear wall of the pocket B by stitching or other suitable means, and to the back of this downwardly-projecting rear portion of the flap A an upwardly-extending flap O is secured. The upwardly-extending flap C is secured to the flap A along the lower portion of the latter and along the, opposite ends of the latter, one or both, leaving a space between the flap A and flap C for the insettion of the shield D of the chatelaine=hanger,
The front face of the upwardly-extending flap 0, attached to the back of the pocketbook, and the shield D of the chatelainehanger are provided with interlocking devices for removably fastening the hanger to the pocket-book. The fastening device which I prefer to use consists of the ordinary yielding spring-stud and socket-fastening, and two of these fastenings are employed, although the number may be more or less than two, as may be feasible. In the present instance I provide the upwardly-extending flap 0 on its inner face with the sockets denoted by c c" and the rear face of the shield-D with spring-' studs denoted by 61 ct, so that when the shield is inserted between the flap 0 and the rear part of the flap A the studs d 61' may be pressed into the sockets o o, and thereby lock the shield D of the pocket-book in removable engagement. From the shield D straps E E lead upwardly to the shank c of a hook e for engaging the belt.
When for any reason it is desired to carry the pocket-book without the chatelaine attachment, the latter may be removed in a moments time, and when so removed the pocketbook will have little to distinguish it from an ordinary pocket-book, as the sockets c c are concealed from view andthe back flap O has simply the appearance of a reinforce at the back of the pocket-book.
It is obvious that changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but
WVhat I claim is- The combination with a pocket-book provided with a back flap secured to the back of the pocket-book leaving an open space between the flap and the back of the pocketbook, of a chatelaine-hanger provided with a ence of two witnesses, this 18th day of Decemshield adapted to enter the space between the flap and the back of the pocket-book and her, 1899.
means for removably secnrin the shield of 1 the hanger in its position in said space, sub- 1 CHARLES SCHERLR' Witnesses:
5 stantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres- FREDK. HAYNES, EDWARD VIEsER.
