, SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,710, dated September 24, 1895. Applicationneanm 31, i894. vRenewed August 8.1895. sern1N5.558,685. (No 10551.)
. To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a'new'and useful Windmill-Tower, ot' which the following is a speciication.
The invention relates to improvements in windmill-towers.
The object of thepresent invention is to simplify and improve the construction of windmill-towers, to increase their strength and durability,`and to lessen their cost.
` A further object of the invention is to provide a convenient ladder, which will enable the top of the tower to be readily reached from either side thereof, and to enable the tower to be arranged aV sufficient distance from a well to provide a solid foundation, whereby the tower may be firmly and securely erected.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a windmill-tower constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating the construction of the platform and the manner of bracing the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the connection between the walking-beam or leverand the windmill pump-rod. Figs. 4 and 5 are det-ail sectional views illustrating the manner of vmounting the turntable support. Fig. 6 isa detail perspective view of the windmill pump-rod clamp.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a windmill-tower, triangular in horizontal section, constructed of metal and composed of vertical bars 2 and horizontallydisposed cross-bars 3, connecting the vertical bars 2 and arranged in the form of a triangle. The bars 2, which may'7 be disposed vertically or at aslight inclinationto give abroader base to the tower, if desired,"are constructed of iianged metal and are T-shaped in crosssection. The fianges 4 of the bars 2 are secured by rivets 5 or other suitable fastening devices between the ends 6 of the horizontal bars 3, which have their ends bent at a slight angle to itsquarely against the flanges 4.
The horizontal transverse connecting-bars 3 are arranged at regular intervals and at suitable distances, and they provide at each of the three sides of the triangular tower a ladder to enable the top of the tower to be readily reached. By this construction and arrangement an efficient ladder is formed at each side of the tower without necessitating the employment of eXtra material over and above that required for the construction of the tower itself.
The tower is located a sufficient distance from the well in order to provide a solid foundation, which is arranged within a suitable excavation, and which consists of cobblestones and the like and a suitable grout, the thin diluted mortar percolating through the crevices formed by the stones and setting and binding the entire material into one common mass.
The pump-rod 7 of 4the tower is connected at its lower end with a pump 8 by a lever or walking-beam 9, which is fulcrumed at the top ofa post 9a. 4
The lever o r walking-beam is hingedly connected with the pump-rod 7 of the tower by means of a link lO, which has its upper end pivoted in a bifurcation 11 of a socket 12, and which has its lower end similarly connected by a bolt 13 with a clamp 14, secured to the pump-rod 7. The socket or cap 11 fit-s on the adjacent end of the lever or walkingbeam, and the clamp 14 is composed of two similar sections or jaws 15, connected intermediate of their ends by a transverse web 16, and possessing suicient resiliency to clamp the pumprod 7. The front ends of the jaws or sections 15are-connected by a clamping-bolt 17, which holds the jaws in contact with the pump-rod. The rear ends of the jaws are slightly spread by the clamping action of the frontends and loosely receive the lower end of the link and are perforated for the reception of the bolt or screw 13.
The bolts or screws 13 may, if desired, be provided with nuts, or may, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, engage threaded perforations of one section of the clamp.
The pump-rod is supported at intervals in order to render its reciprocation steady and free from lateral movement by trefoil-shaped braces 18, having a central opening 19 and provided with outward extending arms 20. The braces are arranged in pairs and their arms 20, which are three in number, are provided with angularly-bent ends 2l, arranged at the outer faces of the horizontal bars 3. The braces are provided adjacent to the horizontal bars 3 with perforations in which are arranged clamping-screws or bolts 22, which may be, if desired, provided with nuts, but which are perferably arranged in threaded perforations of the lower brace.
The tower is provided at the top with a vertical tube 23, which is supported at its lower end by trefoil-shaped braces, arranged in pairs and constructed as before described, and it is secured intermediate of its ends at the top of the tower by a turn-table support or base 24, having a central cylindrical opening formed by a tubular portion 25, and provided with a depending concentric fiange 26, provided with openings 27 and straddling the top horizontal bars 3 and secured to them by screws. The turn-table support is provided at its top with a circular track rib to receive the turn-table of any desired construction, and it is provided with clamping-screws 28, arranged in threaded openings of the depending tubular portion 25 and engagingthe vertical tube 23.
The tower is provided near its top with a platform 29 of circular shape. This platform is firmly supported by angular braces 30, and is provided with a peripheral flanged supporting-rim 3l. The rim 31 is provided with a vertical fiange arranged at the outer edge of the body of the platform, and it has a horizontal flange extending beneath and supporting the platform. The braces 30 are angular, consisting of a horizontal arm extending beneath the platform, an inclined bracing portion extending from the outer edge of the platform downward from the adjacent bar 2. They are three in number, one being located at each vertical bar 2, and their ends are bent at an angle and extended along and secured to the outer faces of the bars 2. The platform is provided at one side with a hinged trap-door 32.
Guy-rods or cables 33 extend from the tower for holding the same plumb. They have their upper ends secured to the vertical bars 2, adjacent to one set of horizontal bars 3, and their lower ends are adjustably connected with threaded Shanks 34 of anchors, which consist of the said threaded shank and a circular anchoring-disk 35, arranged at the lower end of the shank. The shank is provided with a nut 36, which secures a ring 37, that is provided with an eye for the reception of the lower end of the guy-rod or cable. By screwing the nut down the guy-rod or cable may be drawn to the desired tension, and the tower may be firmly supported.
The walking-beam or lever 9 is fulcrumed on its post 9 by means of a hinge comprising upper and lower leaves 3S and 39, connected by a knuckle-joint, and the lower leaf is rectangular and receives and is bolted to the upper end of the post, which is slightly roduced.
It will be seen that the tower is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction; that it possesses great strength and durability; that it is firmly anchored a suitable distance from a well to insure a solid foundation, and that a ladder' is provided at each side of the tower.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. Y
