ARMPIT SHIELD.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY J. BUTLER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
ARMPlT-SHIELD.
S?ECIFIOATIO1\T forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,877, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed .Tune 3, 1892. Serial No. 435,391. (No model.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY J. BUTLER, of Peoria, county of Peoria, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Armpit-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to what are known as dress shields, or arm-pit shields, adapted to be worn under the dress beneath the arm to prevent the perspiration from passing to .the dress and injuring the same.
Great difficulty has hitherto been encountered in practice in maintaining the shield in its proper position and in keeping it smooth and free from wrinkles, so as not to impair the fit of the dress, and it is the object of the present invention to avoid these difficulties.
The present invention consists in an improved shield having its edge provided with fastening devices to engage the under-garment, and having secured thereto loops or straps adapted to pass over the shoulder and engage the fastening device on the outer garment.
The invention also consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,--Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved shield as it appears when in use, parts of the outer garment being removed to show the connection to the shoulder of the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shield detached.
Referring to the drawings,-A represents the shield consisting, as usual, of the arm portion (1, adapted to pass over the arm of the wearer, and the adjoining body portion 1), adapted to fit beneath the arm against the body in a well known manner.
In applying my invention I provide the edge of the body portion b, at intervals, with fastening devices adapted to be engaged with or secured to corresponding fastening devices on the corset or other garment over which the shield is worn. These fastening devices may be of any suitable form such, for example, as hooks, eyes, loops, buttons, &c., which will adapt them for the ends in view, but I prefer to employ elastic loops 0 c, or in place thereof, buttons which are secured to the edges of the body portion of the shield, and arranged to engage hooks d d, 850., secured to the corset at points corresponding to the position of the loops. As a result of this construction the edges of the body portion will be effectually secured to the corset so that it will fit snugly and smoothly against the body, thus insuring a good fit of the outer garment.
In orderthat the arm of the shield may be prevented from slipping down from its proper position when in use, I secure to the shield, preferably at the point where the arm joins the body portion, two long elastic loops ff, and connect their ends by means of an eye g. These two loops are adapted to extend over the shoulder and the eye to be engaged with a hook h, fixed to the seam of the dress on the inside. By this means the shield, as a whole, will be held up under the arm and the dress while in place, owing to its connection to the loops at the shoulder, will effectually prevent the shield from moving out of place.
In applying the shield it is firstslipped over the arm, the loops engaged with the hooks on the corset, and the eye 9 engaged with the hook on the inside of the dress, when the latter may be finally secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A dress shield comprising a body portion and an arm portion, open at the shoulder, and having at the sides separate loops or straps adapted to pass over the shoulder and engage a fastening on the outer garment, the body portion being provided along its edges at intervals, with fastening devices adapted to engage corresponding fastening devices on an under garment or corset.
2. A dress shield comprising a body portion and an arm portion, a loop or strap adapted to pass over the shoulder and provided with a fastening device adapted to engage a corresponding fastening on the outer dress, the arm portion formed to encircle the arm, and
the body portion provided at its edge with MARY J. BUTLER. Witnesses:
