IMPROVED BROOMFHEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,232. dated June 13, 1865- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. BoLEN- DER, of Lima, Allen county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Metallic Broom-Head; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to a simple, cheap, and compact head or clamp for a corn broom, adapted to partially or wholly supersede the use of twine or wire in the manufacture of brooms,

and enabling any person who has the straw to y manufacture orrenew brooms at will.

Figure l is an axial section through a broom constructed on my plan. Fig. 2 shows the parts of my head or clamp detached.

A is ascrew-threaded stem, having a collar, B, and a shank, O, which shank is driven firmly into the butt-end of a wooden handle, D.

To prevent the shank C rotating in the handle it may have the represented angular form, or it may have a nick or eye to receive a keypiece driven through the side ot the handle, which key-piece may be hidden by the ferrule, to be presently described.

Fitted to the stem A is a nut, E, which is connected by arms F with an oval ring, G, the said parts E, F, and G forming collectively a single stirrup-shaped piece of metal, which I call the binderf7 H is a funnel-formed piece of sheet metal, having an oval section, and being entirely open at its wide end, and having its narrow end cir- To charge my broom with straw it is only necessary to take the proper quantity of stalks, and having inserted a portion of their butts through the binder, and having arranged the remaining portions around the binder, the whole are then inserted into the sheath, and the stem A being introduced from above and made to enter the nut E, the handle is rotated so as to screw the stem into the nut, and by that act to wedge the butts of the stalks tirmly up into the sheath.

I claim herein as new and ot my invention- The arrangement of screw-stem A B C, binder E F G, sheath H I, and ferrule J, or their equivalents,) to form a metallic broom-bead, substantially as set forth.
