Description
No. 44.736. 4 Patented 0Ct.18,1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES E. MILLER, OF AMELIA, OHIO.
IMPROVED BROOM-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 34.736, dated October 1S, i864.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MILLER, of Amelia, Olermont county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Head for Brooms 5 and I do herebyT declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, ret'- erence heilig had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to a peculiarly-formed metallic head adapted for attachment to a wooden handle, and provided with jaws, between which fresh broom corn or other material can be secured in a i'ew seconds and the broom be as good as new, the device being particularly intended for the use of farmers and other residents of rural districts, who, having abundance of the raw material, are hereby enabled to make their own brooms at a momeuts notice, and at a nominal cost.
A is a neck or stem terminating in a screw, B, by which the head is secured to the handle.
C and D are two jaws, which, for the economy of weight and material, may have the represented or equivalent open form. The jaw C either forms one piece with the stem or is attached rigidly thcreto. The loose jaw D is hinged to the stem A. The fixed jaw O is provided with spikes 0r teeth E, which, traversing the body ci' broom-corn, assist in hold. ing the same firmly in position.
F I1" are thumb screws, by means of which the two jaws are rmly drawn and held together, so as to clamp the corn between them. Scallops d on the inner sides of the jaws may assist in holding` the corn in place.
G is a ferrule employed to strengthen that end ofthe handle which receives the screw B.
Instead ofthe screw B the stem itself may terminate in a screw-threaded socket for the reception of the handle, a hole in the side of which socket may receive a common woodscrew to enter the substance of the handle, and thus preventits turning` in or withdrawal from the socket.
The material which I have hitherto employed for my broom-head has been malleable cast-iron; but other metals-such as wrought iron, brass, or simple cast-iron-may be used for the purpose.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, the metallic broom-head composed of, the devices A B O D E F F', arranged and operating substantially as described.
In testimony ot which invention I hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES E. MILLER.
