Description
S. DARLING. UALIPER RULE (No Model.)
No. 477,105. Patented June 14, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL DARLING, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CALlPER-RU LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,105, dated June 14, 1892.
Application filed October 6, 1891. Serial No. 407,930. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Caliper-Rules, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved device for fastening the caliper-slide in any desired position, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents aside view of a caliperrule provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken in the line so on of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section taken in the line y 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents an axial section of the wedge for holding the slide, showing a preferred form of construction.
In the accompanying drawings,A represents the body of the rule, and B the caliper-slide, which is provided with the ordinary graduations, and within arecess 0, made in the body A, is placed the gib Z ,whieh is adapted to bear against the edge a of the slide B, and at the back of the gib b in the perforation (Z, whichis extended from side to side of the body A, is placed the wedge O, provided with the heads 6 6', against which the thumb and finger are placed for operating the wedge, and when the said wedge is pressed in one direction its action upon the rear edge of thegib I) will serve to force the said gib against the edge of the slide B to hold the same securely in position, and when the wedge is pressed in the opposite direction the gib b and the slide B will be released from pressure, so that the said slide may be moved to any desired position. The wedge C is preferably made with a solid head 6 and with a central opening f, adapted to receive the stem 9 of the solid head e, by which means the wedge C may be made removable for the purpose of repair, and the heads 6 and 6 will be made to have a smooth finish.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the body of the rule, provided with a transverse perforation, and the caliper-slide, of the tightening-wedge having opposite projecting heads and held in the transverse perforation, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the body of the rule, provided with a transverse perforation, and the caliper-s1ide,of the tightening-wedge made in two parts, with asolid head upon each part, and held in the transverse perforation, substantially as described.
SAML. DARLING.
