Description

H. W. RANDALL. Gross-Bow. g No. 214,791. Pa tented April 29,1879 1 WITNESSES INVENTUR WM/Z N.PETERS, FHOTOIJTNOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D, C.
UNITED STATES-PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. RANDALL, OF PAWTUGKET, RHODE ISLAND.
lM PROVEM ENT IN CROSS-BOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,791, dated April 29, 1879; application filed March 24, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. RANDALL, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain Improvement in Gross-Bows, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to an improvement in cross-bows; and consists of an adjustable attachment by which the bow may be easily and quickly secured to a shoulder-stock when it is'd'esired to so use the bow, and by which, also, the bow may be as quickly and easily removed from the stock when it is to be used separately.
The accompanying drawings are hereby made part of this specification, similar letters of reference thereon indicating corresponding parts.
Figure l is a perspective view of the stock and bow securely fastened together by means of my said device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device with broken view of a part of the stock, and showing the operation of the clamp and lever, hereinafter described.
a is the stock, I) the trigger, and c a spring facilitating the operation of the part 1). cl represents the bow, e e the stationary or under part of the clamp, and f the movable or upper part of said clamp. g is a slotted longitudinal projection from the base of the parts a 6 through the slot h, in which the part f extends to connect with the lever i. k is the fulcrum of said lever, and m the fastening which holds the lever in place when the bow is secured to the stock. The parts 0 e are lateral projections from the metallic strip, one end of which terminates with the slot h, and the other end extends upon the under surface of the stock, to which it is secured by screws or otherwise, as seen at n a in Fig. 2. To this last-mentioned end are cast two shoulders, 0, between which the lever is secured by a pin to make the fulcrum k. I
The operation of the device will be seen to be very simple. The handle of the lever being depressed from the stock, the movable part of the clamp f is raised and the bow may be removed. The bow being replaced, the handle of the lever is. pressed toward the stock, bringing the part f firmly down upon the bow, and holding it tightly in the parts 6 e of said clamp.
For convenience I cover the center of the bow with a strip of felting, velvet, or material of similar surface, to prevent the bow turning I in the clamp.
The fastening of the handle of the lever at the part m may be by ring and staple, as seen in the drawings, or may be by thumb-screw or clasp, or button protruding through a slot in said handle, or by any other well-known means.
The connection and disconnection of the bow and stock to and from each other by means of my said device are so quickly and.
easily made that the archer can use the bow with or without the stock whenever and as often as his fancy dictates the change.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a cross-bow or cross-gun, the combination of the lever t and clutche f with the how (I and stock a, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as shown and described. HENRY W. RANDALL. Witnesses:
THos. P. BARNEFIELD, GEO. W. BARNEFIELD.
