(No Model.) A
G. H. MURRAY.
BEDSTEAD TABLET.
Patented May 12, 1891.
., moro-umo., m sumcwo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CRAIG I-I. MURRAY, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
BEDSTEAD-TAB LET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.452,348, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed October 6, 1890. Serial No. 367,367. (No model.)
T0 at whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CRAIG I-I. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Bedstead-Tablet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a small table, tablet, or tray to be attached to the head-piece of bedsteads to be used as convenience may require; and it is my object to construct by a simple inexpensive means a tablet that can readily be attached to either side of the bed stead, as desired, and when not in use may be readily folded out of the way and sight, and this I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a parthereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a back end view with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the tablet and its supporting-hinge attachment. Figs. 4 and 5 are a group of details, showing the separate parts of my invention; and Fig. 6 is a perspective View illustrating the manner of using my invention.
Like letters refer to like parts.
The tablet A,preferably consisting of a stout frame a, covered with some suitable material, is provided with two staples b, into which are inserted the clamp-hinges c, and the latter secured between the tongues of the bracketarm d. Such arm is then pivoted in the bracket 6, attached to the back of the headpiece of the bedstead. I find two screws f f sufficient for this purpose, one of which f constitutes the pivot for the arm and the other f serving as a stop for holding the bracketarm in a vertical position when the tablet is folded out of the way, the head of the screw f being allowed to project sufficiently, sothat it will engage one of the tongues of the arm on the latter being raised to a vertical position. The arm (1 may be constructed of a strip of sheet metal, folded together at its center, so as to come sufficiently close together to firmly grasp and hold the clamp-hinges 0 when inserted between its tongues. The arm may also be further stiffened, if desired, by inserting between its tongues from 00 to y a strip of the same material.
For supporting the tablet in alongitudinal position I provide a foot-rest, consisting of a foot or crutch g, which may be constructed of a stiff metallic rod, bent, as shown, so as to leave an eye at its base, in which links the eye-pin h, the latter being inserted and held in a vertical boring made to receive it in the slat-rest on the interior side of the bedsteadrail, by which arrangement said foot-rest is adjustable, so that it may be turned laterally and folded out of the way behind the bedstead-rail when not in use. I give the footrest the form shown, so that one end will serve as a supporting-crutch, on which the tablet rests, while the other, being curved and slightly hooked at its extreme end, will catch in an eye 1, provided for that purpose on the bottom of the tablet, thus constituting a firm and secure support for the latter, from which it cannot accidentally disengage itself.
When it is desired to use the tablet, it will be adjusted as shown in Fig. 2, and when it is not to be used it may either be allowed to drop or be folded up back of the head-piece by raising it and the bracket-arm to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bed-tablet, in combination with the head-piece and side rail of a bedstead, a tab let A, provided with staples b, interchangeable clamp-hinges c, reversible arm cl, means for pivotally supporting said arm in a horizontal position when in use and vertically when the tablet is folded away, and a suitable support attached to the side rail, on which to rest the other end of said tablet, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a bed-tablet, in combination with the head-piece and side rail of a bedstead, a tablet A, provided with staples b, interchangeable clamp-hinges c, reversible arm d, bracket 0, in which the said reversible arm (Z is pivotally supported at f, and such bracket being also provided with a stop f, against which the arm (K may be rested in a vertical position when said tablet is folded away, and a suitable supportattached to the side rail, on which to rest the other end of the tablet, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a bed-tablet,in combination with the head-piece and side rail of a bedstead, a tablet A, provided with staples b, interchangeattached to the bedstead-rail by an eye-pin 71, able clamp-hinges c, reversible arm (Z, a on which to rest the other end of the tablet, 1o bracket e, in which the said reversible arm (Z substantially as and for the purposes dcis pivotally supported at f, and such bracket scribed.
5 being also provided with a stop f against CRAIG II. MURRAY.
which the arm (1 may be rested in a vertical Witnesses: position when the tablet is folded away, and T. J. GEISLER,
a supporting-foot consisting of a crutch g, J. XV. EST.
