BOTTLE-'STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,268, dated September 14, 1886.
Application filed December 26, 1885. Serial No. 186,806. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, A-DOLPI-I BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BottleStoppers; and. I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent rubber employed in stopping the exit of bot ties from coming in contact with and contaminating or giving taste to the liquid contents of said bottle, and to provide a stopper of increased convenience, durability, and effectiveness.
Theiuvention consists in the improved stopper constructed and the parts thereof arranged and combined substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in theclauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a front and side elevation of a portion of a bottle having the improved stopper thereon. Fig. 3 is a section of the same, taken through line :0, and Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the stopper-cap disengaged from the extremity of the bottle.
In said drawings, a indicates an ordinary bottle having a head or mouth, b, the top of which is preferably flat, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4..
c is a collar, secured around the head of the bottle by means of a pin, d, which enters a suitable recess in said head, as in Fig. 3, or by other means. Said collar is provided with inclined under edges, 6 e, which may be scalloped or indented, as in Figs. 2 and 4, to prevent the clamp from slipping. Said collar is also provided with vertical recesses f f and with proj, with a protuberance which serves to raise the clamp above the body of the cap, to prevent any unnecessary friction. At this point the clamp and cap are connected by a pivotal pin, is, on which the said clamp works in opening or closing the bottle. From this pin the clamping-wire extends oppositely on each side of the bottle, the extremities being inwardly bent, as at Z Z, to engage the under edges of the collar 0. Within the cap, at the top, is placed a block or disk of rubber, m, and beneath this a layer or disk of cork, a, which latter engages the flat top of the bottle to close the mouth or.
exit thereof, only said cork coming in contact with the contents of the bottle, while the rubber preserves the elasticity of the stopper and gives a uniform pressure, even though the top of the bottle be imperfectly flattened. A metallic plate, washer, or ring, a, may intervene between. the rubber and cork, so that the center pressure of the rubber on the cork will not cause the latter to break where it covers the exitopening. I may also insert a ring or washer, 0, in the recess formed by the protuberance j to level. the upper inner wall of the cap.
In operating the device to open the bottle, the parts being arranged in the relations indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the clamp is turned on its pivotal center, so that the bent extremities ride over the inclines, and the rubber or elastic block is relieved of pressure brought to bear by the clamp. When the said bent extremities arrive, in the opening movement, at the foot of the vertical recess f f, the cap may be raised, as indicated in Fig. 4, the said extremities passing upward into said recesses. As said recesses do not pass entirely across the face of the collar, the clamp is prevented from being withdrawn entirely from the bottle in the upward movement. At the-heads of therecesses the bent extremities find hearings on which the clamp extremities work as the cap is turned to one side to allow access to the exitpassage of the bottle. The lugs g g serve, in connection with the bearings at the heads of the recesses, to hold the cap free from the bottle, as indicated in Fig. 4, and said lugs prevent the arms of the clamp from working free from the collar when the bent extremities are out of the recesses f f. To allow the said arms of the clamp to pass over the lugs g y when the said clamp is being brought into engagement with the inclines c c, I have formed recesses m m in said arms, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
In closing or stopping the bottle the cap is placed on the top of the head, the clamp extremities then passing down and out of the recesses. The clamp is then turned and engages the inclines, and by them the cork in the cap is brought into intimate contact with the flat head, making an impervious joint.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In combination, the collar 0, having inclines c and recesses f, a clamp, 71, and a cap carried by said clamp having a cork,block,or disk therein to close the exit of the bottle, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, the collarhaving inclines e, recesses f, lugs g, and a suitable fastening, d, a clamp having bent ends to engage said inclines, and having recesses m and a cap pivotally secured to said clamp, and having blocks 4. In combination with a bottle having inclines, and a stopper having a clamp with turned ends Z Z to engage said inclines, the stopper pivotall y attached to the clamp so that the clamp may be turned without turning the stopper, and so that the stopper may be suspended from the clamp without detachment, substantially as herein described.
5. In combination with the neck of a bottle, the scalloped or indented inclines arranged and adapted to operate in connection with a clamp,substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. In combination, the bottle provided at the neck thereof with inclines c e, recesses ff, having bearings at the heads thereof,and lugs g g, a stopper pivoted on a clamp, 71, and said clamp having bent ends, the said clamp being adapted to engage said lugs and bearing and be by them held so that the stopper will be free from the bottle, substantially as shown and described.
