1 iATEs THOMAS w. IIOWSON, oE ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 559,079, dated April 28, 1896.
; Application fil d November'l, 1895.. Serial no. 568,200." on model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS VW. HOW'S'ON,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
This invention relates to stoppers for hottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object of the invention is to provide an effeetive device of this class which is simple in @onstruction and operation and which may be used in connection with vessels .of .difierent sizes and retained and used as long as the stopper lasts.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved stopper, showing the core or body portion of the stopper which I employ and also a covering therefor;- Fig. 2, a similar view of the core or body of the stopper; Fig.
. 3, a similar View of the covering or casing re- ,nroved; Fig. 4, a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 'a side elevation thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a stopperoomposed of two parts, the first part comprising a central core or body portion A, which may be composed of any preferred metal or other material, and this core or body portion is cylindrical in cross-section and also preferably hollow, the lower end thereof beng opened, and said core or body portion is also preferably inclined from theuppe'r to the lower end thereof, the lower diameter being preferably less than the upper diameter.
The upper end of the core or body of the stopper is closed, asshown at a, and provided with a shoulder or projection a, through which is passed aring or handle B, and I also provide a covering or casing D, which is composed of rubber, cork, or any preferred material. The covering or casing D is hollow and of thesame general form as the core or body portion of the stopper, and the lower end thereof is closed, as shown atd, and the upper end thereof is provided with an annular inwardly-directed flange or rim (1, which is adapted to fit over the upper end of the core or body portion, so as to securely hold the cover or casing in place.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
My improved stopper is adapted to be used in connection with bottles of anyform or construction, and'also in connection with jugs, jars, and similar vessels, and, as will be understood, it forms asafe and secure device for closing such vessels and may be retained as long asdesired.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, andarrangement of the Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent-- As an improved article of manufacture, a
bottle-stopper composed of a tapering and cylindrical bottom, core or body open at the lower end'and closed at the top end which is provided with ashoulder or projection, a ring or handle engaged in said projection and a covering or casing or rubber cover or other suitable elastic sdbstance, fitted oven said core or body, so as to cover the bottom and circumference thereof and the margin of its top, "all constructed, substantially as shown and described. a
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as any invention Ihave signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of November, 1895.
. THOMAS W. HOWSQN.
