Description
DAVID' M. BOYD,
0F INDIANAPOLIS,
INDIANA.
TILTING DEVICE IN SHINGLE-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,616, dated June 25, 1861.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
3e it known that I, DAVID M. BOYD, of the city of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Tilting the Block-Tables in Shingle-lVIachiiles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawing (marked Figure l and forming a part, of this specification) and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement for tilting the block-table in a shingle machine, I will proceed to particularly describe its construction and operation:
l is a` reciprocating sliding frame; L is a base-plate forming a part of said sliding frame; C is a vibrating block-table, on which the block rests while gaging the shingle; V, is a lever securely fastened to one end of block-table C, passing through a slot in base-plate L and extending to the adjustable plane F. F is an adjustable plane on which onev end of the lever V is caused to rest; X is a spring securely fastened to the outer frame; P is a trigger hung, or fastened to the spring X; S is a coil-spring to hold trigger P to its proper forward position; O is a scroll spring fastened to spring X to hold trigger I in its proper backward position.
IVhen, by any application of power, the
sliding-frame B is put in motion, the lever V, is caused to more on adjustable plane F (the plane being arranged on a parallel line with the sliding frame l). The lever V, at the terminus of its for y'ard motion falls by its own weight and passes under the adjustable plane F, remaining on the under side in its backward and next forward motion,
when it is caught b the trigger I) and lifted b e Ot above and passes again on top of the plane F, then alternately changing the position of block-table C so as to hold the table on that diagonal line to the edge of the knife, required to give the shingle its proper taper, and cnt at either end, alternately, the tip and butt of the shingle.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The horizontal adjustable plane F, with the lever V, together with the spring X and the trigger I), with its appendages, the coilspring S and the scroll-spring O, when these parts or their equivalents are arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth; the object and nature of the invention being to secure the tilting of the block-table of the shingle machine at the proper moment and to avoid any change of the table during the time the shingle is being cut` DAVID M. BOYD.
I'Vitnesses:
C. M. VALKER, N. G. BURNHAM.
