Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. A. WORTHE-N, OF MORRISVILLE, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM WALKER, OF MORRISVILLE, VERMONT.
CROSSCUT-SAWING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,904, dated December 1 1, 1860.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, S. A. WORTHEN, of Morrisville, in the county of'Lamoille and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wood-Sawing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specication, in the several figures of which similar characters of reference denote the same part.
Figure 1 is a top view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line x This is a crosscut sawing machine in which the log is automatically released at the termination of the cut; the details of construction and operation being as follows:
In the drawing F is the main frame and S the saw reciprocated by rotation of wheel W by pitman connection P upon horizontal guides G, which move vertically upon rods R of main frame. The saw being raised by lever a and rod b, when the log is being adjusted after the cut.
The log is held in rests B and grasped by stud c and arms d of lever L. Said lever being held to the required position by the pendant spring ratchet I), (Fig. 3).
Secured to the vertically moving saw frame is a depending arm I, and constituting part of the spring ratchet is the upward bent arm H.
As the saw passes through the log the arm I acts upon the arm H of spring ratchet, releases the lever L and permits weight WV connected therewith to draw up the long arm of said lever and release the log at the termination of the cut for the succeeding feed. The saw is then drawn up, the log fed, and secured by lever L which is securely held by the spring ratchet D.
I claim- The spring ratchet D, arm I, lever L, weight IV', and arm H, in combination with the reciprocating' saw and frame arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
S. A. WTORTHEN. Vitnesses:
PAGE GOULD, PHILIP K. GLED.
