y HARVESTER. No. 298,854. Patented May 20, 1884.
' 2111 fl-awe FFIG Partnr HENRY A. HOVE, OF ALBION, NEW YORK.
HARVESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,854, dated May 20, 1884.
Application filed March 19, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ARCHIBALD HowE, of Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harvesters; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
its attachments, and the lifting mechanism, and also in the construction of the devices for supporting and adjusting the grain-wheel, all as shown, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings which accompany this specication, Figure lis a plan of a harvester of known construction with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical central cross-section on line X X in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the shoe to which the grain-wheel is adjustably secured. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 3 on line y y. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the inner end of the grain-platform, with the hand-lever for controlling the adjustment of the grain-wheel. j
A is the harvester-platform; B, the grainwheel, C, the shoe to which the grain-wheel of the platform is adjustably secured in the following manner: a a. are parallel guides, which hold the plate bin contact with the shoe and allow of its being freely moved up or down between the guides, and is limited in its downward adjustment by the stops a d, cast integral, respectively, with the shoe C and plate b. d is the axle ofthe grain-wheel. It is castintegral with the plate b. A small roller, e, is secured to the lower edge of the shoe by means of ears c, which are cast integral therewith, and a chain, f, is attached to a rod, g, which passes under the platform to the inner end thereof, and connects there with another piece of chain, 7L, which passes around [the roller z', and thence over the grooved quadrant k, where it is attached at Z.
L is a bracket for connecting the table A with the main frame by means of the extension s, which carries the standard m. It consists of a base plate, s, the outer end of which is provided with ribs s', which form a recess to receive the inner end of the platform A, to which it is secured by bolts or in any convenient manner. Said bracket has cast integral therewith ears I, which support a roller, i. To the base-plate s is bolted the standard o, having on its upper end the segmental rack p. n is a pin projecting from and forming an integral part of the standard o, on which is fulcrumed the hand-lever m, the lower end of which carries the quadrant k. p is a springpawl engaging with the rack p, and is operated by the handle u.
In practice the driver is enabled to grasp from'his seat the hand-lever m, and, by releasing the pawl from its engagement with the rack p, is at liberty to move the lever on either backward or forward, the former movement effecting a raising and the latter a lowering of the platform at the grain-wheel. The lever m may be inclined toward the drivers seat, if necessary, to bring it within convenient reach, or to allow the driver to exert his strength to more advantage.
It will be readily seen that with the controlling devices for the grain-wheel attached, as they are, to the platform itself', no disturbance of the adjustment can occur whether the platform is tilted or its distance from the ground changed at the inner end thereof. To prevent the rod g from forming a possible obstruction under the platform, and thereby get disarranged, it may be held thereto in any convenient manner-for instance, by eyebolts or otherwiseand the grain-wheel B is prevented by proper stops, as a d', from passing beyond its extreme limits of adjustment.
W'hat I claim as my invention isl. In a harvester, in combination with the main frame and platform thereof, the bracket L, provided with ribs s and the extension s, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, in a harvester provided with means for adjusting the platform, of the bracket Ii, consisting of the plate s, ribs s', and ears I, cast in one piece, and constructed IOO to support the mechanism whereby said adjustment is accomplished, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a harvester provided 5 with means for adjusting the platform, of'the bracket L, consisting of the plate s, ribs s', and ears I, cast in one piece, and provided with the standard o, secured to the base-plate s, and having cast integral therewith the rack 1o p and pin n, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
4. In a harvester provided with means for adjusting the platform, in combination with the shoe C, having cast integral therewith the guides a a and stop a', the plate b, having I5 cast integral therewith the axle d and stop d', whereby the relative movement ofthe plate and guides is limited, substantially as described.
