WALTER PRESTON HENDON, OF DALLAS, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. BEMENTS SONS, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
FRAME-LIFTING DEVICE FOR DISK PLOWS OR SIMILAR IMPLEMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,683, dated October 30, 1900.
Application filed November 9, 1899. Serial No. 736,343. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER PRESTON HEN- DON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the ounty of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Frame-Lifting Devices for Disk Plows and Similar Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in disk plows and similar implements, and especially to means employed for raising and lowering the frames of said plows in order to regulate the depth of the furrow; and the object of my invention is to make a convenient and substantial means of raising and lowering said frames that will be easily operated and rigid and reliable in its application.
Figure l is a view of the device in which the frame is raised to its highest point. Fig. 2 shows the device with the frame at its lowest point.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in both figures. l
A is the frame of the plow, to which is rigidly bolted the lift-guide D, in which slides the lift=slide O. The axle R of the rear wheel M is attached to this slide by the bracket N. The lever-ratchet F is rigidly bolted to the lift-guide D. A rack B is cut in the slide 0, which is adapted to engage with the teeth of the lever-gear E. The lever-gear E is concentrically attached to the lever ratchet F and has bolted to it by bolts k k the lever I, to which is attached the plunger G, actuated by the plunger-lifter K and wire H. The plunger G is adapted to engage with the teeth of the lever-ratchet F. By means of this construction I am enabled to readily place the lever-gear E in any desired position with reference to the lever-ratchet F and to rigidly secure it in that position.
The operation of the device is as follows: Supposing the different parts to be in posi tion, as shown in Fig. 1. If the lever I be thrown back, say, to the position shown in Fig. 2, the lever-gear E, revolving on its axis, will raise the slide 0 and with it the wheel M, thus permitting the frame A to drop by its own weight and the disk or plow to penetrate more deeply into the ground. It is clearly evident that by means of the plunger G and plunger-lifter K in combination with the lever-gear F any desired position may be readily secured and retained.
Carried by the slide 0, at or near the lower end thereof, is a bracket for the swinging wheel-carrying axle, (indicated at B.) This bracket, as will be seen, has a bottom plate and upwardly-extending sides N, diverging from their juncture with the slide C and inclosing a triangular space within which the arm R is movable. The arm R has the wheel M journaled thereon at one end and at the other end has a downwardly-projecting pivot 7', located and adapted to work in a socketpiece, (indicated at Q.) The arm B, it will be seen, is free to swinghorizontally between and from one of the plates N to the other, they serving as stops for the arm. At the forward ends of the side plates N, above the arm R, is a cross-piece I, secured to the tops of the side plates and serving to prevent upward movement of the arm R. It will he noticed that the bracket N is so fashioned and positioned that it does not interfere with the free upward movement of the slide in the guide and also being to one side of the rack B and the lever-gear E in no wise limits the free up-and-down movement of the slide.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a guide-bracket provided with a guide-channel for a lifting-slide, and also with an integral part at one side thereof extending at an angle thereto and having a toothed sector, a lifting-slide working in said channel and provided at its lower end with a bracket N and at the side thereof, adjacent said toothed sector with a rack, a lever pivoted on said sector part, a segmental rack carried by said lever cooperating with the rack on said slide, and a ratchet-dog carried by said lever, and adapted to engage said toothed sector, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a guide-bracket, a slide working on said guide-bracket, a wheel-, axle having a pivot, a bracket carried by the slide having a socket in which said pivot works and having means to limit the swing of said axle-arm, a rack on said slide, a lever having a gear cobperating with said rack, and lockin g means for said lever, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a guide-bracket hav- 5 ing a guide-channel, a slide working in said channel, an axle-bracket on said slide having diverging side flanges, an axle having a pivot Working in a socket in the axle-bracket and adapted to swing between said flanges, a rack on said slide to one side of said wheel-bracket, 16 a lever having a gear coperating with said rack, and locking means for said lever, substantially as described.
