Beit known that I, H. M. JACOBS, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and I 1nproved Machine for Burnishing Spoons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speeication, in which- Figure l is alongitudinal vertical section of my invention, taken in the line x x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 3; Fig. 8, a plan' or top View of the same.

This Ainvention relates to a machine for burnishing the inner sides of the bowls of spoons, and it consists in a novel means for graduating the pressure of the burnishers on the spoons, and also in a novel arrangement of parts for automatically feeding the burnishers over the work.
The invention further consists ina means for presenting` the burnishers to the work and causing the same to act properly thereon.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a horizontal table or platform supported at a suitable height, and having a driving-shaft, B, underneath it near one end. On this shaft B there are placed two crankwheels, C C, with rods D D attached, the front ends of which are connected to the upper ends of arms E E', the lower `ends of the arms being provided with oblong slots a, through which pins b pass into pendants F, attached to the under side of the table. i
As the (parts connected with both arms E F/ are precisely similar, those connected with one arm only will be described. The upper end of the arm E is connected by a joint, c, with a slide, Cr, to which an upright, H, is attached, said upright passing up through a slot, d, in the'table, and having a cross-head, I, on its upper end.

arms being secured in the cross-head by pins c, on which the arms are allowed to work. (See Fig. 2.) To the outer end of each arm a burnisher, K, is attached byajoint, f. These burnishers are attached to the arms at about their centers, and the upper ends of the burr nishers are slotted vertically, as shown at g, and have pins h passing through them, which pins also pass through horizontal slots i in plates i, attached to the cross-head. The pins h are connected with nuts j, which are iitted on a screw-rod, L, placed in a suitable bearing, k, attached to the cross-head I. On the a ratchet, Z, and on the screw-rod adjoining the ratchet Z there is placed loosely a lever, M, to the upper part of which a double or reversible pawl, N, is attached, said pawl having a spring, a', bearing on it. The lower end of the lever M has a rod, O, connected toit, said rod being bent so as to formL two upright portions, m a, as shown in Fig. l. To the under side of the table A there is secured by screws p p a curved bar, S, the curva ture of said bar corresponding to a longitudinal profile of the bowls ofthe spoons to be burnished. (See Fig. l.) j The lower end of rod Q rests on the bar S, and said rod has a double spring, b, attached to it, which spring bears against the under side ofthe slide G.
On the table A there are secured dies T. These dies are placed directly under'the burnishers to receive the bowls of the spoons, the bowls being secured in the dies by clamps q', arranged in any suitable way.
The operation is as follows: Thebowls of the spoons (shown in blue, Figs. l and 2) are tted in the dies T, and secured therein by the clamps g', and the burnishers K are adjusted so that their points will bear on the inner surfaces of the bowls of the spoons and with a greater or less pressure by adjusting the rod Qin the up` 4right H at a greater or less height, the springs screw-rod L, at about its center, there is placed R producing the pressure. The screw-rod L is turned so that the burnishers K may be at one side ofthe bowls, and the shaft B is rotated by any convenient power, and from said shaft a reciprocating movement is given the upright H and cross-head I. and consequently the burnishers, by means of the crank-pulleys C, rods D, and arms E. The burnishers move back and forth over the inner surfaces of the bowls, the curved bar S causing the burnishers to rise to conform to the curved surfaces of the bowls, and the springs b' depressing them and keeping the lower end of the rod Q, in contact with bar S. rlhe burnishers K move back and forth over the same place on the bowls and at the termination of each complete stroke, and the pawl N is actuated by means of one of the shoulders or upright portions m or n of rod O coming in contact with the upright l?, thereby moving the lever M. This movement of the pawl turns the screw-rod L, which, through the medium of the nuts j, adjusts laterally the burnishers K, turning them on their jointsf, and causes them to traverse over the whole width of the bowls, and after they have traversed over the bowls in one direction the position of the pawl N is reversed and a reverse feed movement will be given the burnishers. The shoulders m n act alternately in moving the pawl N, one shoulder operating when the pawl is in one position and the other shoulder operating when the pawl is in the other position, the shoulder m operating at the termina tion of the backward stroke of the burnishers and the shoulders n at the termination of their forward stroke.
It will be seen that the feed movement of the burnishers is automatic and very readily reversed at the proper time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The arrangement of the burnishers K, attached to the arms J, the screw-rod L, connected with the burnishers by the nuts j, the ratchet Z, pawl N, and the lever M, actuated, substantially as shown, for the purpose of feeding the burnishers laterally across their work, as described.
2. The adj ustable rod Q, provided with springs R R, iitted in the upright H, having its springs R resting on the arm J of the burnishers, l'or the purpose of graduating the pressure ofthe burnishers on the bowls of the spoons, as set forth.
3. The curved plate S, when combined with I the rod Q, having the springs b b attached and arranged relatively with each other, as shown, for the purpose of causing the burnishers while moving back and forth to conform to the longitudinal profile of the bowls.
