1 Claim. (Cl. 240-4) This invention relates to a combination easy chair and back adjustable light.

Broadly, it is an object of the invention to provide a goose-neck light at the back of an easy chair so that it may be readily adjusted in any desired position for reading or working without in any way interfering with the person sitting in the chair or preventing the person from getting out of the chair and striking the lamp.

More particularly, it is an object of the invention to provide a goose-neck lamp passing through the back of an easy chair which is firmly attached so that it is fireproof and easily adjustable to throw proper light for the person sitting in the chair.

For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference is had to the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an easy chair showing a goose-neck light attached to the back.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the central part of the back of the chair with parts partly broken away.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the bottom portion of the threaded pipe shown in Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged view taken through line 4--4 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing, numeral represents an easy chair of any well-known desired type which may be covered in leather, fabric or synthetic material. The frame of the chair is made of wood and generally has a top cross member 11, a bottom cross member 12 and an intermediate or seat cross member 13. Vertical openings in vertical alignment are drilled through the central part of each of the cross members 11, 12 and 13 in order to pass a threaded hollow pipe 14 through the aforesaid three openings. Pipe 14 is slightly longer than the height of the back. Metal plates 15 and 16, each having a threaded central opening to permit pipe 14 to pass therethrough, and two smaller openings on each side of the central opening, are attached to the bottom of the top cross member 11 and the top of the bottom cross member 12 by threaded bolts 17 which pass through the smaller openings of plates 15 and 16 and nuts 18. Pipe atent 2,744,997 Patented May 8, 1956 14 extends above the top of the cross member 11 and passes through the filling or stutfing' material 19, a circular collar 20 having a central opening is seated upon the upper part of the pipe 14 and compresses the sufling 19 somewhat. The outer covering 21 is turned in around the collar 20 providing a neat finish around the top of pipe 14. A flexible hollow cable 22 is attached to the top of pipe 14 by collar 23 and is prevented from turning by set screw 24. Cable 22 is of a desired predetermined length and has a socket for a light bulb and a shade at its outer end as shown in Fig. 1.

The bottom of pipe 14 has a hollow rubber gasket 25 seated within its end, as shown in Fig. 3. An electric wire 26 passes through gasket 25, pipe 14 and cable 22 to provide electric power to the lamp.

The person seated in the chair can easily adjust the lamp in any desired position. It is almost impossible for a person who is seated on the chair to strike the lamp with his head in getting out of the chair since he must lean forward to rise and thus easily clears the lamp in getting out of the chair.

It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangement or" parts without departing from the general spirit of the invention.

We claim:

In combination, an easy chair including an upholstered high back, and an adjustable goose-neck lamp supported from and above the central portion of said back, said chair including top and bottom members extending across said back, said cross members having axially aligned openings therein, a plate attached to each of said cross members and having a threaded opening aligned with the respective opening in the cross member, an externally threaded pipe extending through said openings in said cross members and said plates and having threaded engagement with the latter, said upper cross member supporting stufiing material at the top of the back, a circular collar threaded on the upper end of the pipe and compressing the stufling material between same and said upper cross member, and said back having an outer covering turned in over said collar, a collar supported on the upper end of said pipe, a flexible cable having one end thereof secured to said pipe by said last collar, a lamp supported by the other end of said cable in forward overhanging relation to the said chair back, and an electric wire extending through said pipe and said flexible cable to said lamp.
