UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN B. STIMPSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW NORK.
GAlTER-BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,568, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed October 10,1882. (No model.)
` the any of Brooklyn, in the County f Kings Ipo and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gaiter Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention, which is applicable to boots andshoes for men, women, and children, re'- lates to boots and shoes in which the upper part that surrounds the ankle is composed of elastic web. It has been common in boots or shoes of this kind to stitch on a strip of `leather where the edge ofthe button-fly would come in a button boot or shoe, to stitch imitation buttonholes in the elastic web, and to secure thereto imitation buttons.
The invention consists ina boot or shoe hav'- ing the upper quarter on the inside of the ankle from the front to the back seam, and the outside quarter from the back seam `to or near the front seam, both of elastic material, and having a button-fly attached to the inside ankle-quarter at the front seam and adapted to lap over the outside quarter, as fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of 'a boot embodying my invention. piece ot' elastic web which forms the upper quarter onthe outside of the ankle, and also represents the button-fly. Fig'. 3 represents the piece of elastic web which forms the upper quarter on the inside of the ankle, and Fig. 4 represents a sectional perspective view illustrating the way in which the pieces of web `forming the outside and inside quarters ot' the boot or shoe are connected with the button-Hy.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the gures.
A B designate respectively the two pieces ot' elastic web which form the upper quarters ofthe boot on the outside and inside of the ankle. 'Ih ese two pieces of web are connected by the back seam of the boot. For mens boots the uppers are foxed; but for womens and childrens boots and shoes they may or may not be foxed. t y
O designates a button-dy, which maybe made of elastic web, or of cloth, leather, or other material, and G designates the buttoniy lining.
Fig. 2 represents the The piece of web B, which forms the inside of the boot, extends from the back seam or the back ot' the boot to the front seam, a, and
by the front seam the said piece B is connected with the button-fly C and fly-lining C', and with the usual front stay, a', when a front stay is applied to the seam. The piece of web A lon the outside ofthe boot may extend from the back seam clear to the front seam, a; but as this would tend to make the boot clumsy I preferably continue the piece A near to said front seam only and `but a little way under thel button-dy, and between it and the button-dy lining C', as best shown in Fig. 4.. The piece A is secured to lthe edge or marginal portion ofthe y C byone or more rows ot' stitching, b, andthe stitching mayextend through the fly, as shown, thereby securing it down; or the edge of the y may be left free, like an ordinary fly. In the Hy O are formed real button-holes o, and d designates buttons the eyes of' which are inserted through the buttonholes and sewed to the piece A. and to the fly-lining C. Itthe piece of web Adoes not eX- tend under the ly C as far as the buttons d, the latter may be sewed to the Ely-liningOonly, and they cannot tear off, as there is no strain upon them.
My improved boot and shoe presents the precise appearance of a button boot or shoe, and cannot be readily distinguished therefrom, while the button-dy always ts closely and neatly on the upper, and there will be no creases on the instep, and, moreover, no buttoning or unbuttoning is necessary, buttons are notliable to'come oft' in Wear, and buttonholes will not wear out.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boot or shoe having the upper quarter on the inside of the ankle from the front to the back seam, and the outside quarter from the back seam to or near the front seam, both of elastic material, and having a buttonliy attached to the inside ankle-quarter at the front EDWIN B. srIMPsoN.
