SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,581, dated February 8, 1881.

Application filed November 20, 1880. Moder) or other suitable material-one, A, stitched atthe back seam of the upper, and the other, B, stitched at the vamp, and both extending nearly to the front seam, substantially as shown in the drawing, but not fastened there. The buttons are sewed or otherwise fastened through the outers, stays, and linings. In use, the strain on the buttons being sustained by the stays, the leather does not tear from the seam and the buttons do not pull out;

The accompanying drawing shows the button side of the upper part of the boot without the lining, X being the outer leather; A, the stay from the back seam; B, the stay from the vamp. The dotted lines a a, and b 1) represent the stitching at the back seam and the vamp, respectively, and 0 0 represent the fastening of the buttons.

In shoes only the stay from the ramp is necessary.

This invention is applicable to boots or shoes of any material.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improvement in boots and shoes, the combination of the stays A and B with the vamp and quarters, all attached and arranged substantially as shown and described.
