Description
H. M. IHSEN DIVIDED FRONT BRASSIERE Sept. 19, 1950 Filed June 29, 1948 INVENTOR l! M "K M 6 Patented Sept. 19, 1950 DIVIDED FRONT BRASSIERE Hulda M. Ihsen, Allentown, Pa., assignor to Charis Corporation, a corporation of New York Application June 29, 1948, Serial No. 35,899
. 1 This invention relates type of brassiere which controls both the bust and ,the, diaphragm.
One of the drawbacks in the conventional brassire is that the diaphragm section, which must fit snugly to achieve control, tends to impede the free movement of the bust section during changes in posture. As the lines of the body in the front lengthen and shorten during changes in posture, the pull against the brassiere will cause both the bust section and the diaphragm section to shift their position on the body, thus creating discomfort to the wearer and reducing the effectiveness of the diaphragm control.
In accordance with the present invention, I meet this difficulty by providing a diaphragm controlling member which underlies in part the bust member and which is detached along its top and bottom edges from the brassire proper. In such case the bust portion and the diaphragm controlling portion move independently of each other. Accordingly, the bust, being controlled solely by the bust controlling portion of the brassire, is free to move independently of the diaphragm which is controlled solely by the detached diaphragm controlling portion and in such case the diaphragm controlling member can be fitted tightly across the diaphragm of the wearer without impeding movement of'the bust portion. Furthermore, since the detached diaphragm member underlies in part the bust member, control over the diaphragm is obtained over the entire diaphragm without interference with the bust portion.
A preferred form of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig 1 is a front view thereof; and

to improvements in the Fig. 2 is a back or inside view thereof, partly are attached at their front ends to the bust controlling portion [3 and at their back ends to the back of the brassire. The brassiere may also be provided with girdle connecting hooks Ill and I8 respectively which are shown to be attached to the diaphragm controlling portion of the brassire.
Both the bust controlling portion and the diaphragm controlling portion are attached along 2 their respective side edges to the body of the brassire and more particularly to its two's ide panels. A seam 20 is provided to attach the bust and diaphragm controlling portions to side panel H and a hook and eye construction 25 is used to attach said bust and diaphragm controlling portions to the opposite side panel l2. An elastic gusset 22 of triangular shape is interposed between the bust controlling portion and side panel Generally speaking, the diaphragm controlling portion M consists of a band which fits tightly across the diaphragm and which is sufiiciently wide and strong so as to control the diaphragm.
It may be provided with reinforcing bones or steels 25 which extend vertically thereof through its center portion. It is important to note that the upper portion of the member H4 is disposed in underlying relationship with respect to the bust controlling portion and that its lower portion extends downwardly, below the bust controlling portion, and as far as is needed to adequately cover the diaphragm. It may be found desirable to provide an elastic supporting member 26 which interconnects the top central portions of the bust and diaphragm controlling portions of the brassiere but which does not interfere with the independent action of the diaphragm controlling portion. The bust member l3 carries a vertical seam 21 and a triangular seam 2B in each bust pocket.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the bust and diaphragm controlling members are completely free from rigid attachment to each other except to the extent that they are both attached to the side panels of the brassiere. The bust controlling member can thus accommodate itself to a change in position without interfering with the position of the diaphragm controlling member on the body of the wearer. Accordingly, the present garment adequately controls the movement and position of the bust and at the same time it adequately controls the movement of the diaphragm. In view of the fact that the two controlling members are separate and independent from each other the action of the one does not in any way interfere with the action of the other. The bust and diaphragm controlling portions function in the manner of two separate garments, one constituting a brassiere and the other a diaphragm band, but in accordance with the present invention they actually constitute integral parts of the same garment.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that a preferred form of this invention has been shown in the drawing and that this form may be modified and changed in many ways in accordance with individual requirements and practices within the broad scope and coverage of the invention.
I claim:
In a bust and diaphragm controlling garment having a bust member and a diaphragm controlling member attached at each side to corresponding side members which in turn are attached to a back member, the combination comprising a diaphragm member underlying in part the bust member and attached along each side to corresponding side members but detached along substantially the entire length of the top and bottom edges from the bust member and free from rigid connection therewith along such edges, said diaphragm member having its lower portion extending downwardly below the bust member so that it covers the diaphragm of the wearer, a bust controlling member which over- 20 member and the diaphragm member, said bust and diaphragm controlling members constituting the front of the garment and each being adapted to move independently of each other in accordance with the natural movement of the body, said bust and diaphragm members cooperating by means of their common points of attachment to follow the movement of the body parts supported thereby without chafing the body of the wearer and at the same time effecting complete support of the body portions in all positions.
