Description
rMarch 7, 1939. A RUBWSTEIN 2,149,819
BRASSIRE Filed Aug. 18,4 1937 ATTO R N EY Patented Mar. 7, 1939 BRASSIRE vAbraham Rubinstein, Brooklyn, N. Y., assigner to Perfect BrassiereCompany, Inc., Jersey City, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application August 18, 1937, Serial No. 159,695 claims. "(ol. 2 42) This invention relates to brassires and like articles of apparel for supporting the breasts of women.
One of the objects of theinvention is to pro- 5 vide a brassire which can be worn with comfort to mold the breasts in natural shape `without undue pressure.
Another object is to provide a brassire having breast pockets each containing an individually 1n adjustable breast supporting flap soarranged that the adjustments necessary to shape the breasts may easily be effected When-the brassire is in place on the body'of the wearer.
A further object is tov provide a brassire with supporting flaps that are adjustable to partly encircle the breasts so as tod/give the latter the desirable uplift land to support them at the sides as well as from below.
Most adjustable brassires which have heretofore been made tend to draw the breasts together. This is objectionable in Vthat it gives them an unnatural appearance. v p
One of the important features of my invention consists in the 'provision of a brassire which is g5 designed to keep the breasts apart and to hold each breast naturally in place.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully from the following description thereof,y reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the brassire as worn; Y
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the brassire;
Fig. 3 is a sectional' view through one of the breast pockets; and Fig, 4 is a rear View of one of the breast supporting flaps, laid out flat.
Referring now to the drawing, Ill indicates the brassire generally, which 'may be -made of any 4o' desired material. The brassire has a right breast pocket II, a left breast pocket I2, a band portion p I3, side portions I4 and I5, a fastening strap I6,
and adjustable shoulder straps Il and I8. These parts are all conventional and may be of any desired construction.
parts may be omitted or suitably altered.
According to my invention, both breast pockets are provided on the inside with adjustable breast supporting flaps I9 and 20. Each flap is fastened to the brassire along one or two edges only, and
is free from permanent attachment at all yother circle the breasts whereby to mold them intonaty ural appearing shaperand to hold them apart.
If desired, some of thesev The two breast supporting flaps I9 and 20 are exactly alike in form, except that one is re versed end for. end with respect'to the other, and they both rfunction in the same manner. I shall, therefore, for the'sake of simplicity, limit the de- 5 tailed description of these parts tothe flap I9 of the left breast pocket. A/rear view of this flap, laid out flat, is shown in Fig. 4. The ap may be made of a piece of canton flannel or other suitable soft and flexible material. It is preferably' 10 cut with a concavely curved upper edge 2| and it may be stitched or otherwise fastened to the brassire, at the inside of the breast pocket, along its vlower Yedge 22 and one side vedge 23, the rest of the Aflap being lloose. A fabric strap 124, pro- 15 vided with a slide buckle 25 for adjusting its length, is attached at one end `of the tab portion 26 of the flap and at its other end `to the tab portion 21. v Y
Each flap adjusting strap v2li is slidably 'sup- 2o ported by an eye 29 carried on the shoulder straps ,I1 and I8 respectively. The front end of each strap, from the eye 29 downward, may be in the form of an elastic loop =I.1 and I8' to provide a desirable tension on the `breast pockets and on 25 the flaps when the Vparts khave been adjusted.
'I'he inner end of each flap adjusting strap `21! preferably passes freely through a slit or opening 28 in the breast pocket, and the Slide buckle 25 preferably lies on the outside of the pocket. This 30 construction permits of conveniently adjusting the flaps, from the outside of the breast pockets, when the brassire Ais Worn. If desired, however, the slits 28 ma'y be omitted.
Y In use, the brassire is applied and adjusted to 35 the body of the wearer in the usual manner. The supporting flaps 'I9 and 20 may be separately adjusted Aby sliding the buckles 25 to shorten the lengths of their respective vstraps 24. This adjustment draws the tab portions 26 and 21 up- .4.0l
wardly-towards each Aother` kso that'the flap will partly encircle vthe breast and will `support the breast at the sides las well as from below. The adjusted flaps uplift; the breasts vand keep them apart, giving them a natural appearing form. 45
Various lmodifications in the details of construction herein illustrated and described may be ymade withoutdeparting from the spirit and scope yof the invention .defined in the claims.
What I claim isi: f 50 `1.
