' c/DSEP LZKUBUYBIK ATTDRNE Patented June 1, 1948 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE SAFETY POCKET FOB GARMENTS Joseph J. Kubovcik, San Francisco, Calif. Application March 29, 1946, Serial No. 658,288
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a new and improved pocket for garments and has particular reference to a safety pocket that is provided with means for securing and protecting the contents placed therein.
The object of the present invention is to provide an especially constructed pocket and to attach the same to an article of apparel such as a coat or a vest and to form the pocket with a combinatlon of flaps that will positively secure the contents placed therein and thus prevent the contents from getting lost or stolen from the pocket.
Another object of the invention is to provide apair of side flaps that fold toward each other and are connected together at the central portion of the pocket and a top flap that folds over said flaps and upper portion of the pocket and is connected thereto by a conventional slide fastener.
A further object of the invention is the production of a safety pocket that is simple in construc-.
tion, economical to manufacture and highly serviceable in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description:
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification, and wherein for the purpose of illustration like numerals designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the improved safety pocket with the flaps being shown in their open positions;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view illustrating the inside lining of a garment showing the pocket in dotted lines and the safety flaps in their closed positions; and
4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring in detail to the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 6 designates the front wall of the pocket, the numeral l the back thereof, the said front and back being sewed together as at 8 and 9, forming the side walls of the pocket. The said pocket is positioned on the inside of the garments lining l l as shown in Fig. 4, which lining is slit as indicated at l2 and the upper front portion of said pocket is sewed to said lining in proximity to said slit portion 12, as indicated at I3.
A pair of inwardly folding side flaps l4 and I are formed onto the back portion of the pocket and positioned above the upper extremity of the front portion 6, said flaps being provided with conventional snap fasteners l6 and I1 respectively and are adapted to be held in a closed position as shown in Fig. 3. The back portion of the pocket extends above the side flaps l4 and I5 and forms a central flap as indicated at 18 in Fig. 1 5 and which is adapted to fold over said flaps l6 and It as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and is held closed by a conventional slide fastener l9 closing the pocket opening 20.
From the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that when an article such as a bill fold or envelope or other contents 2i, illustrated in dot and dash lines, is placed in the safety pocket, the two side flaps l4 and i5 can be closed across the contents and the top flap l8 closed over said side flaps thus positively securing the contents in the pocket and protecting the same in an improved manner. The said safety pocket can be a direct part of the garment or made separately and easily attached thereto.
It is understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim: A safety pocket for garments having in com 80 bination, a front wall and a back wall and Vertical side walls, an opening at the upper portion of the pocket, the said back wall including in its construction a pair of side flaps positioned above said opening and adapted to fold across the same,
5 a snap fastener for securin the end portions of the flaps together, a central fiap formed on the said back wall and positioned above the said side flaps, the said central flap being adapted to fold over the said side flaps and close the opening of 40 the pocket and a slide fastener for detachably securing the central flap to the front wall of the pocket.
JOSEPH J. KUBOVCIK.
