SALT AND PEiPPER SHAKER l Filed Sept. 50, 1945 Pefented Feb. ze, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER Oscar H. Crowell, Russellville, Ala.
Application September 30,1943, Serial No. 594,453
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in salt and pepper shakers and has for its primary object to provide a container having separate compartments therein and a novel dispensing cap or top adapted to selectively discharge the contents of the respective compartments.
A further object is to provide means for easily and quickly removing the cap to permit filling of the compartments.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which;
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 5 designates a container of plastic or other suitable material having an open top and provided with a partition Ii separating the container into a pair of compartments 1 and 8 adapted to contain diierent condiments, such as salt and pepper.
The upper edge of the partition is formed with a rib 9 Which projects above the top of the container and is dovetail-shaped in cross section.
A cap I is constructed of parallel upstanding walls II having one edge resting on the Walls of the container and also provided with a pair of inclined walls I2 and I3 converging at their lower edges at the center of the cap to form a web I4r having a channel I5 in its bottom edge adapted to conformably receive the rib 9. The cap is placed in position on the container and removed therefrom by sliding the cap across the top of the container with the rib fitted in the channel.
The inclined walls I2 and I3 merge at their upper edges with an adjacent side wall Il of the cap and cooperate therewith to form chambers I 6 and I 'l in the cap in communication respectively with the compartments 'I and 8. The upper -|3 may be closed by plates 2G and ZI hingedly connected on a pin 22 carried by the web I4 and a wire spring 23 is positioned between the plates 20 and 2! to urge the latter against the walls I2 and I3 to close the perforations therein.
A plunger 24 is attached to the plate 20 and projects laterally through the walls I2 and the adjacent wall II of the cap and is formed with a head or button 25 to manipulate the plunger, while a similar plunger 28 is attached to the plate 2! and projects through an opposite wall of the cap.
Guides 2l are provided for loosely receiving the plungers in the chambers of the cap to prevent the contents from clinging thereto.
It is believed that the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A salt and pepper shaker comprising a container of polygonal shape in cross section and having a partition therein separating the same into a pair of chambers, said partition projecting outwardly at one end of the container to form a rib of dove-tail shape in cross-section, a dispensing cover having a partition therein separating the same into a pair of chambers to register with the chambers of the container, said last named partition having a channel in its lower edge adapted to ccnformably receive the rib, one end of the channel opening outwardly at one side of the cover to slidably receive the rib to secure the cover in position on the container, the opposed sides of the chambers in the cover being perforated, a pvoted closure for the perforated side of each of saidlast-named chambers, spring means positioned between said closures for urging the latter toward a closed position, and plungers slidably mounted in the cover and connected to the respective closures for opening the latter, said plungers extending in a direction at right angles to the rib to prevent sliding of the cover on the container by pressure exerted on the plungers.
OSCAR H. CROWELL.
