UNITED STATES ELZA. HOWARD COPEN, OF AKRON, OHIO- SHAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
Application filed September 3, 1920. Serial No. 407,874.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ELZA HOWARD CoPnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 296 Euclid avenue, in the city of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shakers of which the followin is a specification.
y invention relates to improvements in shakers and the object of the invention is to devise a shaker in which the container is so divided as to permit the alternate use of two different seasonings such as salt and pepper. A further object is to provide means in the bottom of the container for filling each of the compartments therein.
My invention consists of the parts constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the shaker constructed according to my invention.
' Fig. 2 is a side'elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section therethrough showing the dividing partition.
Fig. 4. is an enlarged sectional View showing the means for mounting the swingable cover.
Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the screws forming the trunnions of the cover, the said screw being split longitudinally for a portion of its length.
Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the shaker showing the closures for the filling holes of the respective compartments thereof, the left hand closure bemg shown in the closed position andthe right hand closure in the open position.
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail of the bottom of the shaker showing the closure applied to one of the fillingholes.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
1 is the container of the shaker having a dome sha ed top 2 with perforations 3 extending tiierethrough. 4 is a vertical partition dividing the container 1 of the shaker into two separate compartments designed to contain different seasonings. 5 are filling holes in the bottom of the container through which the respective compartments are filled. 6 are suitably hinged closures having raised-surfaces 7 conforming in shape with the filling holes and adapted to enter such holes when the closures are applied thereto.
8 is a cover provided with the lugs 9, said cover covering substantially half the dome shaped top 2 of the container and conforming in shape therewith, said cover being pivotally mounted on the top 2by the screws 10, which are screwed into the top and extend through orifices 11 in the cover. The screw 10 is split longitudinally for a certain extent in order that when the screws are inserted into the orifices 11 they will engage the walls of such orifices and thus prevent the cover 8 from being swung over too easily.
My device is used as follows:
When it is desired to use the seasoning out of one compartment the cover 8 is swung over so as to cover the perforations 3 at the top of the other compartment, thus closing them and preventing any seasoning from that compartment getting out while shaking the shaker in the usual manner.
When it is desired to use the seasoning in the other compartment it is merely necesthe lugs 9 when seasoning will be shaken out.
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a simple and eifective shaker which, can be; used for containing two distinct seasonings such as salt and pepper.
It is to be understood that my shaker can with equal facility be used for other purposes than for seasoning such as for flour, spices and such like.
What I claim as my invention is.
A container having an integral perforated dome-shaped top and a partition wall extendin between said top and the bottom wall 0 the container and dividing the latter into separate compartments, each compart ment being provided with an individual fill- .sary to swing the cover over by means of shape to sm a closure plate conforming in top and movable thereover to permit discharge from one compartment while preventing dlscharge from the remainin through said closure plate and engaged in the domehaped top,
compartment, pivot screws passlng threadedly said screws being split longitudinally to frictionally engage the openings provided therefor in the closure plate whereby the latter is held from moving too freely relative to the container.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ELZA HOWARD OOPEN.
