The razor herein shown is designed 'to `employ interchangeable blades of the type rbest shown in Figsi. `The blade I0 isgenerallylrectangular inloutline having corner recesses which define elongatedunsharpened end-portions and is sharpened at both longitudinal edges. It is ablade of the open-ended type, that is to say, it has'a cen-f tra-l longitudinal `slot Il openingthroug'h one endof `the blade, the other endbeing solid. within the razor and fully in its shaving position as suggested in Fig. 4. Its sharp edges have not touched or been touched by any object and so retain their initial keenness. The guard is provided with a longitudinal recess 26 to receive the bladelocating rib I1fofY the cap and is connected rigidly to the upper end of thehandle 21. At either end of the recess 26 is provided a short slot 24 shaped thehigher end sections I5 of the rib I1. x i
The handle 21 is bored to receive the stem I9 of the cap andV chambered tov receive a corn- `[pression spring 28 which bears at its lower end against the inner end of a cylindrical nut 29 having threadedengagement with the lower end of the spindle I9. Astoplscrew 30 in the lower l end of the spindle prevents by its head accidental disengagement of the parts. The nut 29 is shouldered as shown to bear. againstthe 'end ofthe barrel 21 so that by turning the nut 29 in a clockwise directionthe stem I9 may be drawn positively downwardly within the barrel and a positive clamping pressurecreated between the cap and guard. On the other hand, when the nut 29 is rotated reversely clearance-is provided under the head of the screw 3'8 and the' spindle I9 may then be elevated against the compression of the spring 28 so as to separate the cap from the guard temporarily rand thus permit interchange of blades. To causesuch separation the user may hold stationary the upper portion 21 of the handle and push-up on the tubular nut 38, as suggested in Fig. 2. The spring 28'tends at a-ll times to move the cap and guard toward each other. When this occursthe resiliency ofthe blade snaps it into substantially. flat condition with the detent 1 8 passing freely through the enlargement I2. The blade is thus anchored against longitudinal movement in the razor and, while it is so held', the user may strip v the cover I4 by merelyifpulling it tothe right oifthe` blade.l The bare-blade now, lies safely the nut 29 to clamp the blade in its position he may proceed with the shaving operation.
As already noted, the spring 2,8 tends at all times to move the cap and guard together in a yielding manner. The cap may be lifted by the Wedging action of a blade riding up upon the inclined end faces of the detent sections I8, or
, the user may lift it by lpressing upwardly on the'` i nut 29 when the latter has been unscrewed on the stem I9 enough to afford clearance. When it is desired to remove a used blade the user must flift the cap in this `manner suiiciently` to free 24 of the guard, with the result that the proper alignment of the razor tained.
While the corner lugs `20 of the capdo not ordinarily engage the blade I 0 at any time, they do serve as a safeguard to limit the spreading that might otherwise occur as a result of pulling the blade against the detent tective cover. The clearance between the lugs 28 and the end of the blade IU isy always less than the width of the sections of the detent I8 on each side of the rib I1. Therefore, the side portions of the blade can never spread suiciently to slip past the detent in the operation 'of removing the blade cover.
This application is a continuation-impart of my application, Serial No.497,572, led August 6, 1943.
Having thus disclosed by invention and described one illustrative embodiment thereof, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1. A safety razor having cooperating bladeclamping members, blade-locating means on one of said blade-clamping members, and a detent located on. and immovable with respect to the same memberand shapedfor engagement by a flexible apertured blade sentedendwise between the clamping members, said detent `contacting the until its aperture has vbeen advanced to register with the detent and then entering the aperture and holding the blade against withdrawal.v
