One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved initial holder which can be used in connection with, or as part of, a buckle or brooch or other ornamental article.

While the invention relates particularly to a device in which one or more initials are held Withina suitable frame, it is to be understood that ornamental articles other than initials can be utilized without departing from the invention.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a device which can be manufactured simply and at low cost and which can be readily assembled and taken apart.

Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing which illustrate preferred embodiments thereof, it being understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended generally to explain the same without limiting it in any manner.

Referring to the drawing, the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 comprises a main frame I which may be of any suitable design or contour and which can be made from a single piece of metal or. other suitable material. The front face of said frame may be ornamented in any desired manner. I

Frame I is adapted to receive the supplemental frame Ia illustrated in Fig. 4. The rear of frame I is provided with a recess and with a ledge I2 which extends around the edge-wall of said retudinal lugs I2a and I4 are located behind longitudinal teeth 4a.

The initials 6 held within supplemental frame Ia may be of the general shape illustrated in Fig. 6. Said initials are provided with lugs 6a and said lugs may be thinner than the initials. The rear surfaces of said lugs Ba may be flush with the rear surfaces of the initials 6. Said lugs 5a fit into the recesses between the teeth 4a and said lugs abut the corresponding wall-portions of ledge I2 when supplemental frame I a is inserted in the recess in main frame I. Likewise, when so assembled, the front faces'of the initials are flush with the front face of frame I. Figs. 2, 3 and 8 show that the front surface of frame I and the front surfaces of initials-6 are decorated with jewels or stones J. a

When the initials are assembledwithin frame Ia and said frame is inserted within the recess of main frame I, the assemblage is loose, so that the initials can fall out of said frame. However, the initials 6 are kept from falling forward by the ledge I2 of main frame I. The teeth 4a merely serve to position the initials and to limit the lateral movements of the initials relative to the frame. Lugs 6aof initials 6 come between lugs 4a of frame Ia and both sets of lugs are on the inner side of ledge I2.

After the initials 6 have been removably located in frame I a, they are held in position by means of holding frame I5 which is made of metal or the like. One of the walls of holding frame I5 is first inserted so that it is located between lugs I4 and the initials, and the other wall of frame I5 is then forced into position, riding upon lugs I2a. Said resilient frame I5 releasably engages said lugs. Therefore when frame I5 is in the operative position shown in Fig. 2, said frame I5 has been deformed from the predetermined normal shape in Fig. 5.

which is shown Lugs IZa may be re- Referring now to Figs. '1 to 10, these show modified forms of the supplemental frame and holding frame. The supplemental frame 2| shown in Fig. 9 has one wall provided with a lip 20, which has the same function as the lugs 14 shown in the first embodiment. The bottom wall of frame 2| is provided with projections 22. As in the first embodiment, illustrated in Fig. 4, supplemental frame 2| is also provided with teeth 4a and the lugs 60, of initials 6 fit into the recesses formed between teeth 4a.

As shown in Fig. 10, holding frame 23 is provided with notches 24 in its top and bottom walls. Resilient holding frame 23 can be sprung into position, with its top. wall abutting the inner face of lip and its bottom wall abutting the knobs or projections 22, between notches or recesses 24. The supplemental frame, or the holding frame, or both can be made sufiiciently resilient to enable the holding frame to be sprung into holding position, or to be released from said holding position. In this embodiment, the longitudinal members 20 and 22 are located behind teeth 4a, and the resilient holding frame 2| releasably engages said members 20 and 22.

In each embodiment the holding frame is sumciently rigid so that it can be applied or removed repeatedly, without substantially distorting the same.

Likewise, in each embodiment the holding frame is preferably more resilient and yieldable than the holding means which secure said holding frame in position. In Fig. 4 said holding means are the members 14 and 12a. In Fig. 9 said holding means are members 20 and 22.

The supplemental frames la and 2| may be considered as forming parts of frame I.

Whenever I refer to initials in the description and claims, I include identifying or ornamental members of any kind.

I have shown preferred embodiments of the invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.

This application is a division of my application Serial No. 187,601, filed in the United States Patent Ofiice on January 29, 1938.

I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a main frame having a recess formed therein, a ledge extending around the edge-wall of said recess, a supplemental frame in which initials are located removably held in said recess and abutting said ledge, said supplemental frame having holding means located at its rear face, said holding means comprising lip-means located along one of its walls and projections located along the opposed wall, a resilient holding frame overlying the rear walls of said initials and holding said initials in position, said holding frame being wholly removable from the supplemental frame, the bottom wall of said holding frame having notches formed therein, the top wall of said holding frame abutting the inner face of said lipmeans, the notches formed in the bottom wall of said holding frame abutting the said projections, said holding frame being located in the recess formed in the main frame.

2. In a device of the character described, a main frame having a recess formed therein, a ledge extending around the edge-wall of said recess, a supplemental frame removably held in said recess and abutting the ledge of the same, vertically projecting teeth positioned at the front of said supplemental frame, the said teeth forming a series of recesses therebetween, initials located and removably held within the said recesses, said supplemental frame having holding means located at its rear face, said holding means comprising lip-means located along one of the rear walls and projections located along the opposed rear wall, a resilient holding frame overlying the rear walls of the initials and holding the said initials in position, one of the walls of said holding frame being located intermediate the rear walls of said initials and said lip-means, the opposite end of said holding frame abutting the projections of the rear wall of the supplemental frame.

3. In a device of the character described, a main frame having a recess formed therein, a ledge extending around the edge-wall of said recess, a supplemental frame removably held in said recess and abutting the ledge of the same, vertically projecting teeth positioned at the front of said supplemental frame, the said teeth forming a series of recesses therebetween, initials located and removably held within the said recesses, said supplemental frame having holding means located at its rear face, said holding means comprising lip-means located along one of the rear walls and projections located along the opposed rear wall, said lip-means and projections being located posterior to and laterally spaced from the teeth positioned at the front of the supplemental frame, a resilient holding frame overlying the rear walls of the initials and holding the said initials in position, one of the walls of said holding frame being located intermediate the rear walls of said initials and said lip-means, the opposite end of said holding frame abutting the projections of the rear wall of the supplemental frame.
