HOUSE VENTILATION.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. GRIsooM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of House Ventilation; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in using a part or the whole of the heated air from the heater or hot air furnace of the house, as the means of warming a flue or shaft, and thus converting it into a ventilating shaft.
To enable others to make use of my invention I will proceed to describe the proper arrangement and operation.
Instead of allowing the hot air duct (H, S) as is usual, to terminate at the apartment or opening where the hot air makes its exit for warming the room (H, R,) let it either be extended to the top of the house, and terminate in the open air, or cause it by a lateral branch (C, T) to communicate with a separate and independent flue (T, S,) which must also be extended to the top of the building. A valve (T,) must be placed so as to command the communication between the two parts of the one shaft, if there be but one, (as shown in the drawing of the rear or extension room) or between the hot air and Ventilating ducts, if they be separate.
The passage of hot air through the ventilating tube or shaft, will so warm it, that openings made into it at any point (T, R,

T, R,) will operate as exhaust or Ventilating openings, through which the foul air of the apartment will pass off, in all weathers, and independently of ordinary external currents of air.
Both the connecting and Ventilating tubes should be made of such materials as will the longest retain heat, as, if well constructed in this respect, when once heated, the
eicacy of the Ventilating shaft will continue for a long time without an additional supply of hot air.
The flue of an ordinary chimney, not otherwise used, may be converted into a Ventilating shaft, by connecting it with a hot air duct in the manner described, and represented in the drawing. One shaft may be heated suiiiciently by one current of hot air, to furnish ventilation for several rooms, provided its interior capacity be increased as it extends upward in proportion to the number of openings made into it. The heat which is usually lost by the closing of a hot air register, or when not wanted for heating purposes, as during the vacant hours of a school or church or during the night in a dwelling, will suiice for the purpose.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment of an auxiliary flue or tube connecting the hot air iiue with the Ventilating flue in the manner and for the purpose proposed.
