This invention relates to means for detachably securing a pen, pencil, or the like in a pocket.

The means commonly used comprises a resilient prong secured to the pen extending substantially parallel to and longitudinally thereof, with a ball or projection at the end adapted to engage the pocket at the outside thereof when the pen is inserted in the pocket. A clip of this type is not entirely satisfactory, since in time the prong loses its resilience so: that it does not engage the pocket securely, and moreover the end of the prong may be accidentally caught by a scarf or in some other Way so that the prong is disengaged from the pocket. Moreover, the friction of the prong on the pocket tends to rub and wear out the material of the pocket.

The object of my invention is to devise a means for attaching a pen or the like in a pocket in such a way that it will not become accidentally disengaged and so that it will not damage the material of the pocket.

I have achieved this object by providing interengageable disconnectible parts, one of which is carried by or adapted to be carried by the pen and the other of which is carried by or adapted to be carried by the pocket. More specifically, I provide means for detachably securing a pen, pencil or the like to a pocket, comprising a prong one end of which is adapted to be secured to a pen and to extend longitudinally thereof with the free end of the prong and the greater part of the length of the prong normally spaced from the pen; an anchoring member adapted to be detachably connected to the outside of the pocket below the opening thereof; and means for detachably securing the clip to the anchoring member when the pen is in the pocket, comprising positively co-operating disconnectible male and female parts, one of said parts being located on the prong adjacent the free end thereof and the other part being located on the anchoring member.

It should be understood that in referring to a pen, I am contemplating objects of a like nature such as pencils, and instruments of various kinds which are commonly kept in pockets and secured therein by clips. In referring to a pocket, the pocket may be a pocket in .a garment, a purse or bag, in a special container made for the purpose, or otherwise. i

The invention is hereinafter more particularly described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which 1937, Serial No. 132,717

In the drawing like numerals refer to similar parts in the different figures.

In Fig. 1, numeral H! represents the body of a garment or other object to which the pocket is secured, and is represented as being constructed of fabric, although it may be made of any suitable material. The pocket is formed by the application of a piece of material H to the body material It, although it is obvious that a pocket may be formed in any known manner Without affecting the essential features of this invention.

Secured to a pen, pencil or the like I2 is a clip I3 which comprises a ring M extending around the pen [2, and a prong l5 which extends longitudinally of the pen l2 and spaced from and substantially parallel to the pen I2 throughout the greater part of its length. The clip as described is similar to the clips commonly in use, and it is commonly made of metal, the prong l5 being resilient, although this is not necessarily so with applicants invention. The prong in accordance with the applicants invention is spaced from the body of the pen sufficiently to enable it to pass over the outside of the pocket ll without rubbing against it.

Adjacent the end of the prong is secured a male part 16 of a detachable connecting means commonly called a dome fastener.

An anchoring member I1 is secured by means hereinafter described to the outside of the pocket. This anchoring member is provided with one or more female fastening parts I8, adapted to receive the male part l6 and provided with a spring I8 or other resilient engaging means whereby the clip 13 may be positively but detachably secured to the said anchoring member 11. It will be observed that the parts positively co-act, and it is not necessary for spring pressure to be exerted by the prong I 5 to provide frictional engagement between the prong, the pen and the pocket as is common in the art.

It will be obvious that the anchoring means I! may be provided with any desired number of cooperating parts for detachable connection with one or a plurality of clips, so that for example, a 55 pen, pencil and/or other instrument may be kept in one pocket and detachably secured thereto.

The anchoring member I! is preferably in the form of a metal bar, which may be plated or suitably ornamented if desired, and which may be secured to the pocket by various means, preferably detachable, so that it may be transferred from one pocket to another, for example when one garment is discarded and it is desired to use the device in connection with another garment.

In Fig. 2 I show means for detachably securing the anchoring device IT to the outside of the pocket comprising a pivoted pin IS, the end of which is adapted to be secured in a safety catch or look 20. 1

In Fig. 3 I show a bendable tang 2| at each end of the anchoring member, which tangs are adapted to pierce the material of which the pocket is made and to be bent over toretain the anchoring device or member I! in position on the pocket.

It will be understood that the anchor ll will usually be secured to the outside of the pocket below the upper edge thereof a distance less than the length of the prong 15, to enable the prong to be readily attached to the anchoring member H.

To facilitate the separation of the two parts of the detachable connecting means, I have provided a lug or extension 22 which extends to or slightly beyond the edge of the anchoring member I! to permit the insertion of the users finger nail between the two parts to pry them apart.

It will be seen from the above that I have devised a simple and practical means for detachably securing a pen or the like in a pocket, and have attained the object of my invention.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. Means for detachably securing a pen, pencil, or the like to a pocket, comprising a clip, having a pen engaging part and a prong so constructed and relatively arranged that when the pen engaging part is secured to the pen the prong will extend longitudinally thereof with its free end of the prong and the greater part of its length normally spaced from the pen a predetermined distance at least equal to the width of the material of the pocket; an anchoring member; means for detachably connecting the anchoring member to the outside of the pocket below the opening thereof; and means for detachably securing the clip to the anchoring member when the pen is in the pocket, comprising positively co-operating disconneotible male and female parts, one of said parts being located on the prong adjacent the free end thereof and the other part being located on the anchoring member.

2. The combination as set forth in claim 1 including a lug on the prong adjacent the end thereof which may be engaged by the users finger to separate the cooperating male and female parts.
