Description
April 23, 1940. R. A. ROBERTS El AL QUILTING FRAME Filed Nov. 5, 1937 IMA AA r n I I a? 1 Iva/Roberts INVENTOR 5 a BY ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 23, 1940 PATENT OFFECE QUILTING FRAME Robert A. Roberts and Iva Roberts, Grecnsburg, Ind.
Application November 5, 1937, Serial No. 173,034
1 Claim.
This invention relates to quilting frames, and its general object is to provide a portable wheel supported frame that is primarily designed for home use, and can be easily handled for movement from place to place with minimum effort on the part of the user.
A further object is to provide a quilting frame by which the article, such as a quilt, spread,
cover and the like, being workedupon, can be readily applied and removed with respect thereto and is held taut thereby, and the frame is so constructed to allow free access to both sides of the article, with the result it will be seen that articles can be made thereon in an easy and expeditious manner,
Another object is to provide a quilting frame that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efficient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in, the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
30 Figure 1 is a top plan view of the quilting frame which forms the subject matter of the present invention, with parts broken away and in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximate- 35 ly on, line.22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail sectional View taken through the outer hoop or ring.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that the quilting frame includes an inner hoop l which provides the body thereof and formed on and extending inwardly from the inner hoop are lugs 2 which threadedly receive the upper ends of supporting legs 3 for the frame, the legs being limited in their movement with 5 respect to the lugs 2 by collars 4 and have swiveled on the lower ends thereof casters 5, consequently it will be seen that the frame can be readily moved from place to place with minimum effort.
0 The outer hoop which is indicated by the reference numeral 6 is split and has its ends outturned to provide ears "I for the purpose of receiving through openings therein a bolt 8 that is provided with a winged head 9 and a nut as shown.
The outer hoop cooperates with the inner hoop in securing the material or article worked upon to the frame, and it will be obvious that the material is stretched taut and clamped accordingly between the hoops, through the instrumentality of the bolt and nut connection, as clearly 5 shown in Figure 1.
The outer hoop is held supported with respect to theinner hoop, by substantially U-shaped hanger members), which are inturned and are arranged at spaced intervals about the hoop 6 10 as best shown. in Figure 1. By providing the hanger members which preferably are secured to and rise from the upper periphery of the outer hoop, it will be apparent that the latter is held supported with respect to the inner hoop and 15 casual separation or displacement thereof is practically impossible.
From the above description and disclosure of the drawing, it will be obvious that the quilting frame which forms the subject matter of the 20 present invention, makes it possible for the user tobe seated while working upon the material or article clamped therein, and that feature coupled with the other advantageous features mentioned, facilitates the making of articles on 25 the frame, with minimum effort and in minimum time.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention, will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is:
A wheeled horizontally supported quilting frame comprising an inner clamping hoop, an outer clamping hoop surrounding the inner hoop and split to provide spaced ends, cooperating ears formed on said ends, screw means extending through said ears for securing the outer hoop in clamping relation to the inner hoop, substantially U-shaped members having the outer ends of their arms secured to the upper surface of the outer hoop, and said arms being bent at right angles to their secured ends for directing the arms and the b ight portions of said members toward the center of the hoops to overlie the inner hoop for suspending the outer hoop with respect thereto and for cooperation with the screw means to hold the hoops associated.
