IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,688, dated March 26, 1878 application filed September 1, 1877. I

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORITZ LEINER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Brush, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section, of the improved brush on line 00 m, Fig. 1.

The object of this inventionjis to furnish, for bathing purposes, for brushing horses, and for other applications, an improved flexible brush, that may be conveniently applied for use, and be manufactured at very reason! able rates. 7

The invention consists of a series of round brushes made of bristles retained in twisted wire strands, said brushes being attached to flexible bindings at the ends, and provided with'a suitable handle device.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a brush which is constructed in the well-known manner, by binding on the bristles in the twists of stiff wire strands, so that a round brush, with spirally-arranged tufts of bristles, is obtained, as shown in Fig. 2. A series of brushes, A, is arranged either parallel to each other, or some are placed parallel and others at right angles to the first series, but so as to come close together, with the bristles partly interlocking, the brushes being then connected at the bent or eye-shaped ends of the twisted wires by a lining, B, of leather, rubber, braid, or other suitable flexible material.

The lining B is attached by being stitched firmly to the eyes of the wires, and is covered by an outer protecting lining of suitable color, for improving the appearance of the brush.

At one or both ends of this flexibly-jointed brush is attached a handle, 0; or a gloveshaped handle may be used with the brush, or any other suitable attachment for handling the brush may be arranged in connection with the brush, according as the same is desired for bathing purposes, or for brushing horses, or for other applications, the advantage of the brush consisting in the yielding or flexible connection of the individual brushes, so that they adapt themselves to the shape of the part to be brushed.

The brush is taken hold of with the hand, and the handle attachment adjusted on the hand, and the brush then used with great facility and convenience, being superior to the rigid brushes, which do not accommodate themselves to the part to be Worked upon.

The brush may be trimmed off, to be shorter at one side than at the other, so that one side is stiffer than the other, and exerts a more effective brushing action than the other softer side.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A series of brushes connected at the bent ends of twisted wires by a flexible material,

B, as and for the purpose specified.
