The present invention relates to a combination chair and writing desk and more particularly to a chair having the writing desk portion concealed within the arms thereof.
An object of this invention is to provide a chair of the usual type which may be adapted for use in clubs or the like where space is at more or less of a premium, the chair being so constructed that if desired,
the writing desk portion is readily available for use therewith.
Another object of this invention is to provide a chair having compartments in the arms, one of which holds a writing desk member and the other of which holds material for use in conjunction with the writ ing desk such as pen and ink or the like.
The above objects and advantages of this invention will be more fully described in the following description in connection with the drawings which form a part of this invention, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of a chair and writing desk constructed according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the chair and desk showing the desk mounting in one arm;
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken through the arm of the chair showing the desk mounted therein;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the desk member;
Figure 5 is a detailed elevation of the lock.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figure 1, 1O designates a chair which may be of any suitable size and construction and having a pair of arm members 11 and 12. The arm member 12 is so constructed as to have an elongated compartment 13 therein and a track having spaced members 14 is mounted preferably adjacent the upper edge of the compartment 13.
The forward end of the arm member 12 is provided with a slot 15 and a desk member 16 is adapted to be slidably received within the compartment 13. The desk member 16 is preferably rectangular in shape and may be a board or the like and is provided at its inner end with a ball member 17 which extends upwardly from the inner edge portion of the desk member 16 and is adapted to slidably engage the track means 1 1. The forward end of the arm 12 is provided with a stop 18 which holds the ball member in the track and thereby permits the desk member 16 upon being pulled outwardly to be swung upwardly and downwardly toward the arm 11.
The opposite end portion of the desk means 16 is provided with a socket member 19 which may be countersunk or otherwise secured to the end of the desk means-so as to engage the latch member 20 when the desk member is swung into operative position.
The latch 20 is slidably mounted in the arm 11, and a plate 20 is adapted to hold the latch within the opening in the arm. As shown in the drawing, the socket member 19 may be constructed of an angular member mounted in one corner of the desk member 16. I
We do not wish to be limited to the latch construction shown as any standard latching device can be adapted for use in connection with this desk construction. The desk member 16 is provided at its inner edge and countersunk in the under side thereof adj acent the opposite ends with angular brace members 23 which normally are seated in the countersunk portions 24 of the desk member and may be swung downwardly into operative position when the desk member 16 is pulled outwardly of the compartment 13 so that the inner edge of the brace will rest against the outer end portions of the arms 11 and 12, thereby holding the desk 16 in horizontal relation to the chair 10.
The arm 11 is preferably provided with a writing material compartment 25 which opens outwardly through the top of the arm and forms a pocket and a hinged cover 26 is provided, the cover 26 being of a shape to closely follow the outlines of the arm 11. The cover 26 is provided with a gripping member 27 so that the cover may be swung on its hinges. As illustrated the combination chair and writing desk is shown adapted for use in combination with a commonly used over-stuffed chair such as is usually found in club rooms or the like. It is, of course, understood that this invention is not limited in the details of construction to use in a chair of this particular type and that its use can be adapted to chairs of practically any construction having upstanding arms.
It is, of course, understood that the details of construction may be modified in any manner within the spirit of the invention being limited only by the the following claims.
lVe claim 1. In combination with a chair having a horizontally disposed opening in one arm thereof, a flat desk member, means for slidably mounting the desk in the opening in the arm of the chair, said desk member being adapted to be moved outwardly along said slidable means and swung upwardly and downwardly into horizontal operative position, latch means mounted on the opposite arm of the chair for holding the desk member in operative position, and brace means carried by the desk member for holding the same in horizontal position.
2. In combination with a chair having a horizontally extending opening in one arm thereof, desk means slidably mounted in said opening, said desk means being adapted to be moved outwardly of the opening and into horizontal position, means for locking the desk means in horizontal position, and brace means for holding the desk in horizontal position, said brace means being adapted to engage the arms of the chair.
3. In combination with a chair having a horizontally disposed compartment in one arm thereof, desk means, means for slidably mounting said desk means in said horizontal opening, said desk means being adapted to be moved outwardly and longitudinally of the opening and swung upwardly and downwardly into horizontal position, stop means mounted in one arm of the chair for said desk means, and locking means for holding the desk means against lateral movement with respect to the arms of the chair.
l. In combination with a chair having a horizontally disposed opening on one arm thereof, desk means, means for slidably mounting said desk means in said opening, said slidable means comprising a longitudinally disposed track in the opening of said arm for dependingly holding the desk means within the arm, stop means carried by said arm adjacent the outer end-thereof for determining the outward movement of the desk means, and latch means for holding the desk means in horizontal operative position outwardly of the arms of the chair.
5. In combination, a chair having a compartment in one arm thereof, desk means, means for slidably and dependingly mounting said desk means insaid compartment,
