FREDERICK A. BRAYMER, JR., 0E CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGEOR oF ONE- HALE' HIs RIGHT To ORLIN A..I Eox.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR SHOW-BOXES.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,792, dated January 30, 1877;' application filed June 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. BRAY- MZER, Jr., of Chicago, in the county of Cook and 'State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a general plan or top view of a cigar-box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on the line w w, drawn across Fig. l; and Fig. 3 represents a vertical longitudinal section taken on line y y.
tive views of the same when closed, and Fig. 6 represents a detail section of the hinges employed in securing the covers.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a cigar-box having a series of compartments to contain different grades of cigars, and so arranged as to form a show-case, Within which the cigars may bc displayed for sale; and to that end the invention consists in the arrangement of the several parts of the cigar box, as is hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, A represents the body of the box, which may be made in any desired shape, and of any suitable material. B is a transverse partition, permanently located at a point near the center of the box, and extending upward nearly to the top of the same, as shown in Fig. 3. C is a transverse bar, located immediately above the partition B, and extending upward above the sides of the box, and so secured thereto as to admit ot' being removed when desired. D D are the covers ofthe box proper, which are hinged to the cross-bar C, and so arranged as to admit of being opened or closed at will.
Each ofthe said covers consists of an open frame-work lled with glass, so that the entire area of the inner part of the box can be readily seen when the covers are closed.
E E and F F are longitudinal partitions, permanently secured within the body of the box, so as to form compartments a b c on each side of the partition B, as shown in Fig. l. lhe said longitudinal partitions are less in width than the partition B, so as to leave a space between their upper edges and the lower surface of the covers. G G are horizontal diaphragms, located within the box ou 'each side of partition B, and are so arranged as toadmit of being removed when desired.
The several compartments` are so arranged as -to hold various kinds or brands of cigars, and so that the cigars may be seen through the covers when closed. Each ofthe compartments b is provided with a receptacle, d, for containing matches.
In order to meet the requirements of the revenue law, each box of cigars must be provided with a revenue-stamp, in accordance with the number of' cigars contained in the box, so that when the box is open for the purpose of selling the cigars the broken parts of the stamp shall be retained upon the cover and body of the box, respectively, so that when the cover is replaced on the box the parts of the stamp will agree. To accomplish this, and at the same time prevent the stamp being applied to the glass cover, I provide an extra cover, A', which is so arranged as to lit over the glass cover, as shown in Fig. 2, and is secured thereon by any suitable means which will vallow said cover to be readily removed.
The cover A is of the proper size to receive the bottom ofthe box, so that when removed it can readily be placed under the box, in proper position to protect the part ot' the revenue-stamp adhering thereto, and so that when said cover is replaced the part ot' the stamp adhering thereto will agree with that part of the stamp on the body ot' the box.
After the cigars first contained in the several compartments have been sold, the ordinary box of cigars, which has been duly stamped, can be placed in the said compartments, and the cigars sold therefrom, as aforesaid.
Having thus described niy invention, what er A', all arranged substantially as and for I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letthe purposespeciled. ters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the box FREDERICK A' BRAYMER JR' A, provided with the transverse partition B Witnesses: and longitudinal partitions E E and F F, the N. O. GRIDLEY,
