IMPROVEMENT IN CANISTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent bla-175,869, dated April 11, 1876; application led March 7. 1876.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN NORTON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spice-Canister; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon,

which form a part of this specification:

My invention relates to canisters used in retail-stores for holding different kinds of tea and it consists in a case or shell provided with canisters capable of being removed separately, for filling, &c., and provided each with a cover capable of being opened without removing the canister. It further consists in the construction and colnbination of parts, as

will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig.2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of one of the canisters. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section.

A represents the case or shell, made of any suitable dimensions. The front of the case may be made of any suitable fanciful form, and elaborately ornamented, so as to present a handsome and tasteful appearance. Above this front the top or roof of the box retracts, and upon this portion may be any desired advertisement, such as the names of different kinds and grades of tea. Above this part the roof or top is dat or otherwise, as desired, and surmounted by alarge letter T, having also suitable advertisement` painted or otherwise affixed thereon.

The back of the case is open and the rear par-t of the roof also left open. vIn this case, from the rear, are inserted a series of canisters, B B, the inner portions of which are made somewhat in the form of the case, so as to fit under the roof of the same. Each canister is provided with a lid, C, hinged at the upper end in such a manner that the lid can be opened without removing the canister from the case. Back of the point where the lid C is hinged to the canister is a vertical shoulder, a, which admits of a hinged handle, D, being attached to the top of the canister and yet pass in under the roof of thecase when the handle is turned down, thus lling the space that would otherwise occur, so as to keep out the dirt and -impurities from the inside ofthe canisters. On the front of each canister is a handle, E.

The case A is intended to be placed on the counter in a store and remain in one pl-ace, while the canisters, one or more or all, can be easily taken out separately for filling, or to be placed contiguous to the scales while weighing out to a purchaser, or i'orany purpose required. At the same time the lid of any canister may b e raised without removing the canister from the case. v

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A canister, B, provided with a hinged lid, .(J, offset, Va, and handle, D, adapted to be placed in a case or shell, A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A case or shell, A, having a closed front capable of receiving labels or devices for ornamentation, and having its back portion lett open to receive and hold a series of canisters, B B, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination with the case A, constructed as described, the canister B, having handle D, o'set a, and hinged lid C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
