Description
Jan. 12, '1932. w. c. RATH TRAVELING BAG Filed A r1i 29. 1931 .and catch Patented Jan. 12, 1932 PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM 0. RATE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRAVELING BAG Application filed April 29, 1931. Serial No. 533,705.
The object of the present invention is to provide a traveling bag of novel construction, it comprising a relatively large compartment member which opens at its top and part way down each side either by a hinge arrangement as customary, or, through the operation of hookless fastener devices. The top and part of one side wall is normally covered by a flap member resembling the flap of a brief case, and this flap member carries the handle. In the side Wall under the flap member is formed a pocket opening communicating with the interior of a pocket compartment, so that small objects may be placed in the bag by raising the flap and without the necessity of operating the fastener mechanism which closes the main bag compartment.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an end elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary portion of the bag with the flap raised to expose the side pocket opening.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional View on the line 44, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the bag comprises a bottom wall 1, a front side wall 2, a rear side wall 3 and end walls 4. Applied to eabh end wall are opposed short wall extensions 5 to which may be applied the complementary members of the hookless fastener indicated at 6 and having an operating member 7. The hookless fastener continues from members 5 to and continuous with the top edge of side wall member 2 and side wall member 3 as shown more particularly in Fig. 3.
The base of the bag is relatively broad so as to substantially separate wall members 2 and 3 and the end walls 4 diminish in area toward the top so that the side walls taper toward each other upwardly. In this manner, a relatively large primarycompartment is afforded within the bag, which compartment is normally closed by the fastenlng device.
The bag may be provided with an inner lining member 8, and side wall 2 may be formed with a longitudinal opening at 9 communicating with the interior of a pocket formed by the inner folded pocket member 56 10 suitably secured to the inner surface of side wall member 2.
Secured at 11 to side wall member 3 is flap member 12 provided with a longitudinal reinforcing strip 13 and on its upper surface aboic strip 13 with straps 14m connecting a handle 14.
To side wall member 2 may be secured a buckle 15 adapted to receive a belt-like strap 16 for holding flap member 12 in closed position.
It will be noted that from the side the traveling bag is generally of the appearance of a brief case, it differing therefrom in the general features of construction above described the flap not only covering the fastened top of a single compartment relatively wide at its base and tapered toward the top but also covering the side wall pocket mem- Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows A traveling bag comprising a bottom wall member, end wall members tapering toward the top, side wall members, one of the side wall members carrying a pocket having a longitudinal aperture opening into said pocket, fastening devices adapted to hold together the side wall members at their top the said fastening devices also being so related to each end wall member as to close a vertical opening formed therein which extends to the top of each end wall member, a flap member secured to one side wall member and extending over upon the second side wall member and covering the pocket aperture, means for securing said flap to the last named side wall member and a handle carried by the flap member.
In testimony whereof, name to this specification.
WILLIAM C. BATH.
