Description

WILLIAM S. MAYO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-BLIND-SLAT HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,937, dated August 4, 1857.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. MAYO, of the city and county of New York, State of New York, have invented a new and useful machine, instrument, or fixture for windowblinds, whereby the slats of blinds are prevented from turning or falling of themselvesand are held at any angle of opening desired.
It is well known that great inconvenience results from the overweighting of the inner edges of the slats by the rod and the consequent tendency to turn or fall completely open. To remedy this tendency the ends of the slats are not infrequently made to t very tightly into the holes in the style so that for the first year or two the slats are turned with difficulty by the hand and afterward are turned too easily by the slightest breath of wind or by the weight of the rod.
My invention proposes to remedy this evil by a spring-friction slat holder applied to the end of the rod. To construct this I cut out of a thin sheet of iron or brass a section of a shape as exhibited in the drawing (letter A) the curved arms of which when bent up parallel to each other make a spring which when properly adjusted and secured to the lower rail of the blind will embrace the lower end of the rod and while allowing it to slide up and down freely and smoothly will yet hold it with suificient firmness in any required position7 as seen in the drawing (letter B).
I do not confine myself to the form here indicated. They may be made of many different forms, but
What I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent is` The construction and application to the rods of window blinds of springs or friction pieces of metal to hold the slats in any given position, substantially after the manner and form herein indicated.
WILLIAM s. MAYO.
