Description

J. C. HULL SPRAY GUN Filed 001;. 8. 1925 Dec. 17, 1929.
Patented Dec. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES JOHN G. HULL, on GASIEORT, NEW YORK SPRAY GUN Application fi1ed ctober 8, 1925. Serial No. 61,183.
My invention relates in general to spray guns used in spraying insecticides, and in particular to a gun having its nozzle arranged at an angle with the body thereof, and to means for controlling the rotation of the valve of such a spray gun, whereby the gun may be efficiently used close to the ground for underneath spraying.
The principal object of my invention has been to provide flexible means for connecting the operating shaft with the valve which shall be very simple and durable in construction, easily operated, and which shall be completely covered and concealed.
Another object has been to provide means for frictionally holding the valve in its adjusted position.
The above objects and advantages have been accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is an exterior view of my complete device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sec tional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the valve of the gun, showing the friction means.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged, transverse, sectional view, taken on line 4c4 of Fig. 2.
The device comprises a conducting-tube or body 10, having a bent portion 11 near its outer end, to which the nozzle 12 of the device is attached. At the inner end of the tube 10 is arranged a hose-connector fitting 13, having a branch 14, to which a flexible hose 15, carrying the fluid being handled, is connected. The fitting 13 is provided with a suitable stuffing box 16, through which the operating shaft 17 passes. A handle 18 is fitted to the shaft 17, by which the shaft is rotated.
The nozzle 12 is provided with a body 20, having preferably a screw-threaded cap 21, which holds the nozzle disc 22 in place. As is customary in guns of this type, the nozzle disc is provided with but a single, centrallyarranged opening 23. Arranged within the nozzle body 20 is a valve 24, which is provided in its upper face with a resilient plug 25, engageable with the opening 23 to com.
any suitable flexible means, of a nature that of the flexible shaft is pivotally connected to shaft 28, which extends to the other end of the curved part 11 of the conducting-tube. The two ends of the shafts are connected by I will produce a positive movement of the valve when the operating shaft 17 is rotated. The
shafts mentioned are preferably connected by means of a flexible shaft 29, composed of k a series of blocks 30, each pivotally connected to the other, alternate joints being arranged at right angles, so that a flexible connection is provided. The end 31 of the flexible shaft 29 is pivotally connected to the end 32 of the operating shaft 17, which is preferably square in cross-section, so that the flexible shaft will be rotated with the operating shaft, but will provide a flexible connection with the same. In like manner, the end 33 the squared end 34 of the valve shaft 28.
As will be seen, the flexible shaft 29 is mounted within the curved portion 11 of the conducting-tube, and is thus completely enclosed. In such a structure, it will be clear, there are no projecting or externally arranged parts to be injured or to catch and get out of order when the gun is in use.
Arranged at the bottom end of the valve is a skirt 35, which may be made an integral part of the valve, as shown, or may be a separate piece attached to the shaft 28. This skirt is slit, thereby providing a series of spring arms 36. These spring arms flare outwardly, so that when they are forced together effectively holding the valve in its adjusted position.
While I have described my invention as useful for spraying insecticides, it is clear that it may also be advantageously used for other fluids, such as water, for the purpose of cleaning surfaces, and particularly for washing automobiles,
Obviously, some modifications of the details herein shownand described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims; and I do not therefore, wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof,
.Havin thus descr bed.- my invention, What I cairn is:
L A spray gun, comprising a conductingtuhe having outer bent end, a spray nozzle aving a straight body attached to the outer end of the tube, a valve longitudinally and rotatably movable within the spray no ale and controlling the character of the spray, a rot table op ra ing shaft extending through thestraight part ofthe conducting tube, a rotatable; flexible shaft located in the bent end of, the tube for connecting the: outer end of the operating shaft with the valve, said shaft comprising a plurality of blo s pivota ly connected together.
2- A spray gun, compris ng a conducting tube having an outer bent. end, a spray noz zle having a straight body attached to the outer end of the tube, a. va ve rotatably mounted Within the spray nozzle, a. rotatable operating shaft extending through the straight par f the couducting tube, a reatahle, fle ible shaft locat d nthe be end of: the tube for connecting the outer end of the. operating shaft. with the valve, and, fricti means consisting of a plurality of spring-pressed arms formed integrally with the valve for holding he valve in its adjusted, positlOIl.
I 3.. A s ray gun, comprising a, conductingtube having an outer bent end, a spray nozzle lnavil .g a straight body attached. to the uter end 0 5 he ube, a valve rotatably mounted Within t e spray nozzle, a rotatable operating shaft ex ending th ugh the straight part of the conducting-tube,a rotatable, flexible shaft located in the bent end of the tube for connecting the outer end of the operating shaft with the valve, said shaft comprising a plurality of blocks pivotally connected together, and friction means disposed within the end of the tube and consistmg of a plurality of spring-pressed arms formedintegrally with the valve for holding the valve in its adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed myname.
