point of engagement with the polished rod,-
to insure agaipst excessive side draft upon the rod, resulting in premature wearing.-
lln pumping jacks of the usual construction, thebeam in its travel describes an are at its point of engagement with the polished rod, and since this engagement is more or less positive as regards ment of the rod, the latter 1s constrafnei tothe lateral displace follow the movements of the beam, and thus deviate from the vertical plane of travel which is deleterious in the effect mentioned above, and it is the purpose of the present invention to obviate this apparent disadvanta -e and produce a device of considerable e ciency, at a nominal cost 7 With these foremost objects in view, certain other features of construction and arrangement of parts will become apparent as the description proceeds, taken 1n connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein":
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a jack equiped with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a modified example of the invention and its method of ,installation at a different location on the jack, and 35 i Figure 3 is afurther modification of theinvention illustratin a hinge connection between the beam am supporting post.
It may be stated in continuing further in detail, that arcuate cams, slotted plates and similar devices have precedented the present invention in purpose, but disadvantages have been found to exist in numbers of these movements in that some depend upon the jack for" their compensating movement, while others, being dependent upon a slot and pin, or are frequently slid suddenly from the rectilinear path, due to unwarranted wear, often subject the rod to sudden lateral stresses. It is the object of the present invention to provide in addition to slot defining a changing curve, a co-operative straightslot, 'with a sliding pin, functioning to restrain movement of the beam in lateral directions during its rectilinear travel.
Referring now more closely to the drawings, the frame of the jack constitutes a base suilicie-nt to member 1, and an upright supporting post 2, also an oblique brace 3. The angle or V 4 is operative upon a bearing 5 mounted upon the base member 1, and haspivotal engagement throu h a bar 6 with the beam 7. Uperation of 518 V 4 is established in the usual way by engagement of the line 8"with the stirrup 9 situated near the end of the upright portion of the V.
Taking first the Figure 1 of the drawings,
the invention forms the connection between the beam 7 and post 2, there being as a re sult, a limited lateral displacement of the beam accordingly with its vertical pivotal movement such lateral displacement being controlled and restricted entirely by the pivotal displacement of the platc 10, by reason of the pin 11 following the curve of the slot 12, co-incident with the horizontal sliding of the slot 13 upon the pin 14. .It is evident that the restricted position of each of the pins 11 and 14 prevent (lisplaccn'icnt of the plate in excess of the required amount produce an arcuate movement at the operative end of the beam.
In Figure 2, while a slight departure in form is apparent, the general plan is adhered to and the result identical. The pins 11 and 14 are formed integral with a bracketlfi, which is bolted upon the polished rod 16. Instead of utilizing the plate 10, only a skeleton frame is employed, as shown, defining slots 12 and 13 similar to those made in the plate. At the lowest position. of the beam in pumping, the pin14 occupies a position in slot 13 remote from the arcuate slot 12, while the pin 11 moves to the top of the arcuate slot, such positions being reversed upon upward movement of the beam.
A still further modification of the invention is apparent in Figure3. This figure illustrates the beam 7 as being connected to the post 2 b links 17 forming a kind of hinge. The main is thus free to move in a lateral direction as well as vertically, and the invention which in the present case is bolted to the post 2, controls either move- 'ment of the beam by the pin and slot arcontaining only the arcuate slot 12 in which moves the pin 11 carried by the beam 7,
' Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable variation, and such variation as is in keeping with the appended claims is considered within the spirit of the invention.
Vv'hat is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising in combination with a pumping jack, a plate having an arcuate opening at one end, and an elongated opening situated at right angles to said first opening; said plate being secured to the beam of said jack; and pins arranged stationary with respect to the mounting of said beam to operate in said openings to restrict and co-ordinate the vertical and lateral displacement of said beam.
2. A device of the character described comprising in combination with a pumping jack, a member in which is formed right angular slots, one of which is arcuately curved; said member being arranged rigid with respect to the beam of said jack, and means arranged stationarily relative to the mounting of said beam and operable in said slots to displace the pivotal point of said beam and to restrict said displacement in accordance with the vertical travel of said beam.
3. A device of the character described comprising in combination with a pumping jack a member having a curved slot therein carried by the beam of said jack, means operable within said slot to permit of displaced pivotal movement of said beam, and means adjacent said curved slot to restrict such displacement and to constrain the operative end of said beam to move in a rectilinear path.
4. A device of the character described comprising in combination with a vertically actuated beam; a member carried by the beam formed to define a curved slot; means operable within said slot to permit of vertical pivotal movement of said beam; means on said member to restrict said movement and to permit of limited lateral displacement of the pivotal point of said beam to constrain the operative end of said beam to move in arectilinear path.
5. A device of the character described comprising in combination with a vertically actuated beam; a member carried by one end of said beam for mounting the latter, said member having a curved slot therein; a pin operable in said slot to permit said beam to pivot vertically thereon; means in said member to restrict such movement and to constrain the operative end of said beam to move in a strictly vertical plane.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
