'1 Claims. (01. 74403) {The invention relates to an improvement in straight line pumping jacks and particularly of the type used in lifting oil and water from wells wherein a pump is located at the bottom of'the well and is operated by means of a string of sucker rods: which are reciprocated by a suitable power mechanism and the oscillation of a walking beam. In devices of this type it is desirable to have the reciprocatory motion of the polish rod which extends from the well head occur in a perfectly straight line vertical movement. With the oscillation of a walking beam member for transmitting the power to the polish rod, however, such an arrangement is impossible unless a specific mechanism is provided. for the purpose of avoiding the oscillation of the top end of the polish rod due to the fact that the end of the walking beam oscillates in an are as it rocks about the center bearing. It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a mechanism attachment for the Samson jpost, Walking beam, and polish rod whereby to'the polish rod. 1

The usual construction in pumping equipment of this type to provide a power mechanism is 111115? trated generally at 2. By means of this power mechanism rotation is imparted to the shaft 3 of the pumping unit 4. This shaft carries a suitable crank arm 5 which may have the weight 6 attached thereto, and to which the pitman rod 8 is also connected. As the shaft 3 rotates an oscillating movement is imparted to the upper end 5 of the pitman rod 8 and it is at this point that the Walking beam I2 is connected by means of the pivot shaft l3.
The walking beam I2 is mounted upon a center iron 15 which is mounted on the Samson post [6 in a manner well known in the oil fields. A 2i) walking beam rest 11 may be provided on the Samson post to support the walking beam when it is disconnected from the well head, which is indicated at 20.

A polish rod hanger 25 is connected by the coupling 26 to the upper end of the polish rod. In the usual forms of the invention this hanger 25 is mounted directly on the end of the walking beam and is caused to move up anddown upon oscillation of the walking beam l2.
Needless to say that the end 26 of the walking beam [2 negotiates an arc of a circle because of the fact that it is pivoted at l5 and is caused to rock back and forth upon the center iron bearing IS. The amount of lateral movement negotiated by the end of the walking beam during its oscillation would, of course, tend to move the "polish rod section 22 to the right and to the left as viewed in Fig. 1. This causes a wear on the rod in the stufiing box 23 and it is one of the objects of this invention to avoid any such oscillation and to maintain the polish rod section 22 and the hanger 25 in the same vertical plane at all times so that the polish rod will move smoothly through the stufiing box 23.
A pair of links 30 have been provided as a connection between the pivot pin 3! mounted on top of the end 26 of the walking beam l2 and the pivot pin 32 which extends beneath the lower straddle the, walking beam l2 to form a link which is free to pivot about the pin 3| as a center.
The hanger 25 is seen in Fig. 2 as having two spaced legs 33 which are mounted on the pin 32. Between the links 30, however, an arm 35 has the pin 32 passed through the right hand end, and, as viewed in Fig.- 1, is positioned between the two legs 33 of the hanger 25. This arm 35 extends along the lower side of the walking beam I2 in a substantially horizontal position when viewed,
with the parts shown as in Fig.1.
The left hand end of this arm 35 carries a shaft or pivot pin 36 which receives theupper end of a connecting bar 31 which straddles the arm 9 and has the pin 33 passed therethrough.
