Application fled January 29, 1923. Serial 1T0. 615,558.
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bmronn W. Bnocxn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Guyahoga. and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lm lprovements in Handles for Motor Hand ools, the following is a specification.
This invent on relates to motor driven of which hand tools and particularly to drills,
reamers, grinders and other similar devices of this type.
In a copending ap lication Serial No. 615,557 filed of even ate herewith by the same applicant, for motor hand tools, there is disclosed a device of this characterincluding a casing having motor in the casi and a plurality different posit 1ons,as on the, end
for operating the shaft, 0 connectors arranged in and bottom of the. casing, and adapted for-engage ment with a. removable pistol grip or a handle having connectors in difierent positions and all connected to a supply cable. A switch is provided on the handle for controllin the circuit and the parts are arrange in a. manner such that the operator may use the same handle in diflerent positions upon the tool and thereby control its operation and adapt it to various uses and positions of o ration. In this device the pistol grip or andle was removably secured to the casing by scrrews,.the electrical connection being established by meaiis of an adapter block engaging protected contacts in connectors of both the handle and the easing. This arrangement necessitated the use of a screw driver or other implement to remove the holding means or screws and since one of the objects of the tool is to do away locker latch which will insure the parts re a tool operating shaft, a
disconmainin in engagement after being applied in the esired position.
The foregoing is set for thin one embodiment in the following description and claims.
Refering to the drawin Fig. 1 is a; side elevation of the device; ig. 2 1s a rear end elevation; Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the main casing with the handle or grip removed; Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view with the handle or grip in position; Fig. 5 is a front'elevation of the handle; Fi 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pter or plugging device; and Fig. 7 is a. plan view of the same. I
In the arrangementshown, 1 represents the main casing providedwith a tool receiving chuck 2 constituting the tool operating member or device.
.Within the main casin 1 is an electric motor for driving the c uck 2 and since the motor may be of any well known or preferred type it is not shown specifically and it forms no special part of the invention except in so far as it ma enter the combination or organization. he main casing 1 is also provided with an end cap 3.secure in any manner, not shown, to the main casing. This cap is provided at its rear end with a connector frame): forming a rectangular opening in the end of the cap. Proecting inwardly from the sides of the frame are inw y extending flanges 5 provided with openings for receiving screws 6 clamping a connector or block 7 in place within the frame 4. This connector or block 7 is provided with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending notch or recess 8 the frame at the bottom, as clearly shown in Fig.3. In the bottom of the recess and flush withrits bottom surface, is a pair of fixed contacts 10, each of which is in the form of upper end, with a stop' or lug 15, shown ca along" the v opening out through a recess 9 in in Figs. 1 and 3, for limiting the movement of the handle as will be brought out. The
frame 4 is still further provided, preferabl at its lower end, with an outwardly exten ing latch lug 16 provided with an opening normal to the plane of the outer edge of the frame and adapted to receive a latch bolt 17 normally pressed outwardly by a spring 18, indicated in Fig. 1. This. bolt or latch is held in place, operated and limited in its movement by a hand piece or pin 19 passing through a slot 20in the side of the lug. As cefore indicated, the bolt is normally ressed outwardly so that its end projects yond the outer edge of the frame 4 and it may be moved inwardly by the finger piece orv pin 19 so that its outer end is flush with the outer edge of the frame 4. This lock or latch is utilized to hold the handle in place as will be brought out.
The casing 1, preferably on its lower side, is provided with a frame 21 similar in all respects to the frame 4 having its lateral guides opening out at the rear and provided with a stop at the front and latch or look at the rear. This frame in like manner is also-provided with a connector block. similar to the block 7and similar contacts. Both of these connector blocks are in the supply circuit 'to the motor so that if current be suplied to either of these blocks the motor will driven. The pistol handle or grip structure is preferably in the form of a closed loop, generally indicated at 22, and has a rear hollow grip-ping portion 23 extending in substantially a vertical direction and therefore provides a natural gripping device for the hand of the operator in manipulating the tool. This gri (portion on the inside of the loop is provi e with a switch 23 connected to one side 24 of the circuit. A second wire 25 leads, and is connected, to the two connectors of the handle'or grip. The other incoming wire 26 is also connected to the .con-
nectors.
The handle or grip is provided with ahorizontally disposed frame 27 similar to the frame 4 and provided with a recess corresponding to the recess 9, shown in Fig. 3, in the forward edge of the frame. This frame is provided with laterally projecting flanges 28 eiitending in opposite directions and adapted to nest and slide into the recesses 14 of the frame 21 upon the bottom of the casing. This frame 27 is also provided with inwardly projecting flanges corresponding to -the flanges 5 for supporting a connector block similar in all respects to the connector block '7 and its central recess 8 is in alignment with the recess 9 of this frame. Its contacts correspond to the contacts 10 and are connected to the two wires 25 and 26, so that when the switch is closed, current is transmitted through these contacts. The
front of the grip or handle is also provided with a frame 29 similar in all respects to the frame 27 and provided with a notch corresponding to the notch 9, lateral flanges corresponding to the flanges 28 for en ment with the grooves 14 of the frame on t e end gap, and with a connector block similar to the other connector blocks. In like manner this connector block has the binding post of its contacts connected in the circuits 25 and 26, so that these contacts will also be energized when the switch is closed.
In the drawings, the guides formed by the flanges 13 and recesses 14 on both -the end frames of the main casing and cap. When,
either of the frames of the handle are in engagement with the corresponding frame of the drill, the latch bolt 17 engages behind the frame and prevents bolt is withdrawn.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the user on the job may, without the use of any additional tool or implement, remove the handle from one position and place it in another position, the/handle seatin in every instance and being prevented rom accidental displacement by the latches provided for the purpose.
' Since the contacts of the connector blocks are in the bottom of the grooves 8 no electrical contact is made'bctween opposed connectors by the mere engagement of the handle so that an intermediate transfer '.de vice is provided and it is in the form of an adapter plugi a substantia rectangular strip of insulata air of spaced recesses 31, each of which is be ow a free contact portion 32 of a leaf spring contact 33 secured in place by -a. suitable conductor rivet 34 passing through the strip and secured to the opposite leaf spring contact 33. Each of the free contact portions extends yieldingly beyond the corresponding face of the adapter so that when it is in place it is in a position to make contact with one of the contacts 10 of the connector blocks. In this way the circuit is closed from one connector block of the handle to the corresponding contact block of the main casing or cap.
Having described m invention, I claim 1. In a motor han tool, a motor casing, a motor in said casing, a handle or grip, hand operated interlocking means between said casing and handle, and suitable co-operating contacts carried by said casing and This adapter plug comprises removal until the v handle and arranged for co-operating engagement upon the application of the handle.
2. In a motor hand tool, a motor casing, a motor in said casing, a handle or grip, hand operated interlocking means between said casing and handle, a contact block carried by said casing and provided with a recess, contacts carried by said block and at the bottom of said recess, and suitable con tacts carried b the handle and arranged to co-operate with the contacts carried by the contact block when the handle is applied.
3. In a motor hand toolfa motor casing, a motor in said casing, a handle or grip having sliding interlocking engagement with said casing, an insulating contact block carried by said casing having. a groove or depression extending in the direction of movement of the handle, contacts in the bottom of said groove and suitable contacts carried by said handle and adapted toco-operate 4. In a motor hand tool, a motor casing,
a motor in said casing, a handle or grip, hand operated interlocking means between said casing and handle, a contact block carried by said casing and provided with a recess, contacts carried by said block and at the bottom of said recess, a contact block carried by said handle and rcvided with a groove extending in the' irection of the sliding movement of the handle, contacts carried by said handle block and in the bottom of said groove and an adapter provided with bridging contacts and arranged to nest in the grooves of the casing and the handle.
In testimony whereof I hereby afiix my signature.
