Abstract
722,278. Jointing by stamping. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. March 5, 1953 [Feb. 25, 1952], No. 4936/52. Class 83 (4). A tool for crimping cable sockets of terminal lugs comprises means shaped to conform to the shape of the socket and operable to close around the socket to hold the socket during crimping, crimping means operable to deform the socket whilst the socket is held in the socketholding means, and operating means arranged to operate the crimping means only when the socket-holding means is in the socket-holding position. The tool comprises a pair of base blocks 10, side blocks 11 and side plates 12 and a head block 13. The base block carries a lower jaw 14 between guide members 15. A sliding upper jaw 17 is carried by a screw-threaded spindle 19 rotatable by a handle 21. Threaded on the spindle is a block nut 25 having laterally projecting pins 26 which engage in slots 27 in the side plates 12 for longitudinally guiding the block nut. Means for looking the block nut at the lower limit of its travel whilst the upper jaw is away from the lower jaw and to free the brock nut and to lock the upper jaw when in contact with the lower jaw comprises a pair of pawls 28 pivoted in the side blocks 11, each pawl having noses 28a which engage over chamfered edges 25a on the block nut and tails 28b which engage either the sides of the upper jaw or the chamfered edges 17b on the upper surface of the jaw according to the position of the jaw. A pair of diametricallyopposed crimping punches 30 are arranged to project through aligned holes 31 in the guide members 15 on the base block and in the jaws 14, 17. Each punch is carried at one end of a corresponding lever 32 pivoted on a pin 33 extending between the side blocks 11 and the opposite ends of the levers are connected by links 34 to the block nut. In operation with the jaws open and the block nut locked in position by the pawls 28, as shown in Fig. 3, a cable lug with the prepared end of the cable inserted in the socket is placed in the lower jaw of the tool. The operating handle is rotated to lower the upper jaw towards the lower jaw and the block nut is not released until the socket is firmly clamped in the jaws whereupon the tails of the pawls 28 clear the sides of the upper jaw and so are free to swing inwardly. Continued operation of the handle 21 causes the block nut to tend to move upwardly and the pressure of the chamfered edges 25a on the noses 28a of the pawls causes the noses to swing outwardly and release the block nut and at the same time the tails 28b of the pawls swing inwardly to engage the chamfers 17b on the upper jaw and lock it in position. On further rotation of the handle the block nut moves up along the spindle and the links 34 operate the levers 32 to effect the crimping of the socket on the cable.
