A further object of the 'invention vis to pro- "f vide' aba'sketof thecharacter describedthat is particularly pleasing inI appearance and `-lwell adaptedto enhance the appearance of the artichokes and theirmarketability when exhibited in the stores or 'other marketing places.

Yside wall with portions of the cord resting on the cover and holding the latter in place.`
A further object of the invention is to form a basket of the character described of open construction, allowing of free ventilation of air all around the artichokes. AFurther objects and advantages of my device will appear as the specification proceeds.
The preferred form of my invention. is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figuie l shows a top plan vieu7 of my basket; Figure 2 a vertical section taken along line II-II of Figure l; Figure 3 a vertical section through a slightly modified form of basket; Figure l a vertical Application" i'ed october 3o, 11923. seriaiivo 671,787.

While in the following description thefbasket -will be'- d'escribed with reference Ito thefpacking '-of artichokes; it should be thoroughly Aunder- '1l-stood; that the vprinciples l of v the' invention =inay asavellbe lused inconnection witlr the packing of othervegetables and -fruits'f resemblinglin any mannerartichokes'f in u their general outlines.
^My basket (1)1-coinpi'ises'fa side =\vall"(2) "which may be cylindrical as shown inthe 4draifving,-0r -of any other'suitable forni, a bottom (3)*.a`nd a top rTliebottom is vpreferablyraised and may be Eheld in by means ofsinall blocks (i6) fglued to the inside ofl ther` sidewall as'shown in Figure 2, or 'by'means Iof downwardly extending flaps (7) :glued to the vside wall asshown in Figures L tand 5, or by beingl forced into a circumferential groove I(8) 'formed' between corrugatio'nsv (9) in thematerial'of the side wall as shown in Figure'. The bottom end of the'basket v'is preferably formed in an artistic manner as shown in the various drawings, preferably ilso as -tof match with the form of the ytop of the basket, the construcl-ti'oii ofi-which will be described hereinafter.
Thefbottonifof my basket isE formedwith suitable mea-ns fori receiving the stem of the artichoke and for-'yieldingly lholding the same against removal. irl-his idea is preferably cai'ried out by cutting into the bottom along straight lines in such a manner that a plurality of cuts (11) intersect at one point (12) whereby a star formation is produced. The stern of the artichokewhen forced through the bottom at the point of intersection causes the various tongues formed by the cuts to yield so as to allow thc stein to pass through the bottom with the tongues lying snugly against the stem and oiering considerable resistance to its re- Vmoval, while at the same time allowing air pende upon the size and capacity of the basket7 and if desired these stars may be arranged in the side Wall oi the basket as shown in Figure 8.
Near the top of the basket a seat (13) is formed either by the use of an inside Wall (14) or by a corrugation (16) as shown in Figure 3. rilhe cover (4l) which is adapted to rest on this seatis preferably made oif open construction With netting (17) lilling the space between circumferential members (18) and radial members (19). The mai ginal portion of the cover is recessed to 'form a ledge (21). The upper' end of the side Wall is formed with slits terminatingl in recesses (23) Which may be round as shown in Figure 6 or angular shown at (24) in Figure 7 or of any other suitable form allowing a cord (2G) to be squeezed through the slit and to rest in the recess so that the latter cord may be laced into the Wall in the manner shoivn in Figure 1,run ning` alternately for short distances along the inner side and the outside of the Wall.
The height of the recesses in the Wall is such that the cord ivhen in place rests on the ledge and thereby holds the cover' in place. It it is desired, glue may be applied to cement the cord to the ledge and to the inside of the Wall7 and the cord may be placed on the ledge olf the cover Without being laced into the side wall as shown in Figure 9 at (25), in which case it should be cemented to the side Wall and to the ledffe.
The advantages of this construction are apparent. The manner of seating' and nesting the artichoke in the bottom of the basket has a cushioning eiilect and allows the most delicate Jfruits or vegetables to be handled in the basket Without causing any injury to the skin. vegetables separated and intact so that they cannot bruise. Ample ventilation is provided for, and the whole basket presents a pleasing and attractive appearance. it desired, part of the netting may be replaced by'some kind of transparent material as shown in the form of Figure 3 at (27).
rlhe range of my invention may further be broadened by applying the principles in- It holds the different fruits ork volvcd to the packing of confectionery7 candy and dehydrated products.
I claim:
1. ln a basketl of the character described, an element cut to present coacting tongues merging into the body of the element in unbroken lines and formed to yield to a stem iorced between the same and to individually adapt themselves to the shape oi the stein "for yieldingly resisting` the removal thereof.
2. In a basket ot the character described,
'an element cut along iniersectinp` lines to present radial tongues merging into the body or' the element in unbroken lines and formed to yield to a stem forced between the same and to individually adI pt then:d selves to the shape of the stem for yieldingly resisting the removal. thereof.
3. In a basket of the character described, a raised bottom formed to allow stems of individual fruits or the like to be orced'therethrough and to oer yielding resistance lo the removal thereof and a top member spaced from the bottom, yieldingly bearing on the tips ot the fruits for holding the latter in spaced relation.
4. In a basket ot' the character described, a raised bottom formed to allori7 stems of individual fruits or the like to be forced therethrough and to oiler yielding resistance to the removal thereof and a top member spaced ironi the bottom -yieldingly bearing on the tips ot the fruits for holding the latter in spaced relation A basket of the character described comprising a side Wall formed ivith an internal seat, a cover adapted to rest on the seat iorxned with a marginal ledge and a cord laced into the side Wall resting on said ledge for holding the same in place.
.(3. In a basket of the character described. a side Wall formed with an internal seat, and a cover adapted to rest on the seat formed with a marginal lede'e, the side Wall bei T3 slit and recessed to allonT a cord to be laced thereinto with the inside portions oi the cord resting on the ledge and holding the cover in place.
