Description

me. 23, 1924. M 152mm I E.V J. BLOQM y f GOLF CLUB Filed May 1'7I 1925 Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
'unirse i l new oF-rio- EneAaJ. "encon, or Turm, omo.
Application led Hay 17, 1923. Serial-No. 639,603.
To all 'Lbwm t may concern:
Beit known that I, ,EDGAR J. BLooM,
'a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiiiin, in the county of ASeneca and'St-ate of Qhio, have invented a new and useful Golf Club, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to golf clubs, one
Y of itsl objects being to provide a golf club with a recess or ocket in the handle prtion thereof where y various articles such as a score card, a pencil and the like can be carried conveniently for use at diderent stages vduring the progress of a game being played.
It is well known that pencils, score cards,
' etc. often become lost or broken if carried which will vnot mar the appearance' of the Figure ljis a. perspective view of a :golf
club nor aiect the balance thereof.
With the foregoingA and other objects in. viewwhlch will appear as thedescription proceeds, the invention residesvin the com.-
.bination andarrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described a'ndclaimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention 4herein disclosed may be made .within the scope lof whatis claimed without departing fromthe spiritvof the inven `tion.
In the accompanying drawings4v the pre-.-
ferred .form ofthe invention has been shown. v' 1 In vsaid drawingsclub having the present improvements combined therewith. Y g
Fig. 2 is anenlarged central-longitudinal section through 'a 'portion of the handle of i the clubv showing the'- recess or pocket 'and the parts containedtherein.
A Fig. 3 is an elevation of ascore' card tha canbeused. j
' Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1- designates a'golf club of any type shown'in Fig. 2 a central longitudinalbore 2 is formed in-,the handle portion 3, this here being of any desired. length and extending into the club'from the end of the handle. Seated in the outer end portion of the bore'is a'tubular lining 4 of any suitable material .provided at its outer end Wit-h an annular flange or collar 5 adapted to bear against the end of the member. The inner end of the lining is-formed with 1ongitudinal slits 6 whereby said end can be slightly contracted to facilitate insertion of e5 the vlining into the bore so as to allow said lining to fit snugly in position and frictionally engage the wall of the bore.,
Aclsure inthe form of a t bular plug 7 is insertible into the outer end of the lining I0 4 and has its outer end' closedby'an integral knob or enlargement 8. `The tubular plug is slit longitudinally as at 9 and is interiorly screw threaded, the threaded portion being I slightly tapered tow-ard the knob or enlargement, as shown.- This tubular plug 7 is adapted to reive\one end of a lead pencil 1 0 o r other suitable device that can be screwed into engagement with the threads -in theI plug, causing the plug lto expand4 80 slightly so that it willl frictionally engage the wall of the lining 4. Obvious lshould the plug Work loose it could be caused to I' more firmly engage the wall of the lining simply by forcing the pencil 10 farther into 85 the plug.
. 'Forthe pur se 'of keeping score a score card s uch as s own in Fig.3 can be used. This score card. is made up of a series of.\
`strips ofgcelluloid or other suitable mavr terial, one of which, 12, is divided into t e nine holes played during the rst hal of the spaces being-,adapted to receive data indiv eating the number. of'strokes-played between -every two holes. The' several strips are pivot-.al1 connected at one end, as shown at 14, so t at theycan be folded together, as 10o inFig. 1, and into the recess orf0cket2. v t is of course to be undertood thatother articles than those described'can be retained in the recess or liet 2.
It. isto be un erstood that both sides of I the score card 'are to be rintedalike so that the record by four peop e for eighteen holes can be kept. One side ofthe score card can.
be of one color and the other side of anotherfue me, The remaining strips, 13, are similar y divided though not numbered, the' 95 .s acesI numbered 'from 1 to 9, indicating color so as to enablethe user to determine quickly the side on which the score is being entered.
It will be noted that one of the strips 13 of the score card has-spaces for receiving data indicating the number of yards between holes.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a golfclub having a bore extending into one end thereof, of' a lining within and frictionally engaging the wall of the bore, a closure plug fitting snugly within and frictionally engaging the wall of the lining, means u on the lining and engaging the club for ho ding the lining against longitudinal movement within the bore, means upon the plug and cooperating with .the lining for limiting the inward movement of the closure plug, and a marker carried by said plug and normally housed in the bore.. A
2. The combination with a golf club having a bore extendinginto one end thereof, of a lining within and frictionally engaging the wall of the bore, a closure plug fitting snugly within and frictionally engaging the wall of the lining, means upon one end portion of the lining and bearing against the end of the club for limiting movement of the lining into the bore, means upon one end portion of the plug and cooperating with the end of the lining for limiting the inward movement of the closure plug, and a marker carried by said plug and normally housed in 'the bore.
3. The combination with a golf club having a bore extending into .one end thereof, of a lining within the bore, an expansible plug insertible into the lining 'and constituting a closure for the bore, andexpanding means carried by the plug.
4. rll`he combination with a golf club having a bore extending into one end thereof, of a frictionally retained lining in the bore, an expansible plug insertible into the lining and constituting a closure, and means adjustably mounted in the plug for expandmg it.
5. The combination with a golf club having a bore extending into one end thereof, of a frictionally retained lining in the bore, an expansible plug insertible into the 1ining and constituting a closure, and means adjustably mounted in the plug for expanding it, said means constituting a marker.
6. The combination with a golf club having a b ore extending thereinto, and a score card removably mounted in the bore, of means for retaining the score card comprising a lining within the bore, an ex ansible plug frictionally held within the linlng and constituting a closure, and means for expanding the plug, said means constituting amarker.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
