PAUL smi, a citizen ot the United States, resident ot Seattle, in the county ot King and State ot lVashington, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Heels for Boots and Shoes, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description ot' the saine, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ot reference marked thereon, which torni a kpart ot this specification.

rlhe invention relates to improvements in shoes, and has particular relation to means Yfor attaching heels thereto.

An object of the present :invention is the provision ot means tor readily and securely attaching the heel to the shoe, said means being further adapted to add to the attractive appearance ot' the shoe.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a shoe attaching means which includes a plate adapted to be attached to the heel portion ot a shoe and having means engageable with the heel, whereby the latter will be securely held in place.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations ot parts, as here inatter set forth.

ln these drawings the numeral 10 indi` Cates a fragmentary portion oic a shoe, to which is attached a heel 11, having a forward projecting upper extension 11a.

For the purpose ot attaching the heel to the shoe the present iiwention provides a plate 12, which is preferably termed ot' sheet metal and is shaped to contorni to the outline ot the top ot the heel andis further concavo-convex in section so as to conform to the shape ot the upper face of the heel and ot the adjacent portion oi the 7 shoe.

ln Figures 1 to 5 oi' the drawings the plate is shown as provided with marginal projections, having the torm o'tvV-shaped teeth 13, but the particular configuration ot these teeth is not essential, and may be varied as desired. The teeth 13 are bent downwardly and inwardlv to engage the upper edge of the heel 11, and act to hold the plate and heel together. The plate is further provided with openings 145 for the passage ot nails or similar fastening devices to provide means for securing the plate to the heel portion of the shoe. The plate as thus described serves as a connection between the heel and the shoe, and to turther insure the positiveness ot this connection, the upper tace ot the heel is provided with a transversely extending loop plate 15, while the plate 12 is provided with a` downwardly bent tongue 16 engaging' beneath the loop plate. ln addition, the plate 12 has a forward extension 17 projecting beyond the breast ot the heel, tor attachment beneath the instep ot the shoe, a downwardly and reversely bent hooked tongue or projection 18 forming a rearward continuation of this extension and extending beneath said eX- tension 11al of the heel and being designed for attachment thereto. The parts 17 and 18 may be perforated tor the passage of securing nails or may be attached by other means.

1n the form ot the invention above described, the plate is tirst nailed to the sole of the shoe and the heel is then placed in position, with tongue 16 engaging loop plate 15. rllhe teeth 13 are then bent to engage the upper edge ot the heel and the tongue 18 nailed to the front face thereof. completing the operation. The teeth 13, appearing upon the outer tace of the heel ber 19, and the body 11 not only aid in holding the heel in place, but are intended to provide an ornamental finish for the shoe. i

In Figure 6 of the drawings the attaching means is shown in the form of a U-shaped plate or member 19 having a marginal flange 20 formed by tooth-like projections similar to the projections 13 previously mentioned. The plate 19 is perforated for the passage of securing nails, and the teeth of the flange 20 are bent downward around the upper edge of the heel, in the manner previously set forth.

, In Figures 7 to 10 of the drawings a modilied form of the invention is shown, wherein the heel is releasably held by the plate 11 in positionnpon the shoe, which may thus be worn with a variety of styles of heel, interchangeable to suit the occasion.

For this purpose the body of the plate 11 is made separate from the flange portion 19, a third or locking portion or member 20 serving to connect the forward ends of the U-shaped flange and to continue the same across the front face of the heel. The three partsare secured together by a rivet 21 located at one end of the U-shaped memand flange portion 19 may be joined by one or more additional rivets along the same side of the plate.

The body portion of the plate is pierced at 14 for the passage of securing nails, which are thereby properly located within the margin and out of engagement with the flange 19.V The flange portion has an inner rim lying between the sole of the shoe and the body portion'of the plate, the outer margin of the flange being bent downwardly and inwardly at 13 to engage the upper edgev of the heel and hold the same to the shoe sole. VThis holding action may be secended by engagement of a tongue 22, se-

.cured at its forward edge to the heel, with the wall of a slot-'23 of the plate body.

In engaging or disengaging the heel, the

lockingmember 20 is moved pivotally upon point 21,` the catch flange 24 at the free end thereof being forced from engagement with catch end 25 of flange portion 19,v andV the wedging contact of the heel will spread the free ends of said flange 19 to allow passage of the broader portion of the heel therebetween, the resiliency of the metal serving to restore the flange to normal position, in which it is held by engagement therewith of the catch flange 24. The same movement of the parts will engage or disengage the tongue 22 with its slot 23.

Figure 11 of the drawings illustrates a construction similar to that shown in Figures 7-10, except that the tongue 22 is dispensed with, and that a catch projection 2G is formed in the locking member of the plate, adapted for releasable engagement with a perforation 27 of the body portion.

I claim:

1. Shoe heel attaching means, comprising a plate having means of attachment to the heel portion of a shoe and marginal downwardly bent extensions adapted to grip the sides and rear of the upper edge of the shoe heel, said plate having a forward extension beyond the breast of the heel having means of attachment also to the heel portion of the shoe, and a reversely bent hooked projection extending beneath the forward projecting upper extension of the breast of the shoe heel.

2. Shoe heel attaching means, comprising a two-part plate one member of which iS of U-form and provided with marginal downwardly bent extensions adapted to grip the sides and rear of the upper edge of the shoe heel, and the other member of which has means of attachment to thc heel portion of a shoe and is provided with a forward extension beyond the breast of the heel having also means of attachment to the heel portion of the shoe, and a locking member pivotally engaging one end of the said U- form member and adapted for catch engagement with the other ,end thereof and having a reversely bent hooked projection extending beneath the forward projecting upper extension of the breast of the shoe heel.
