BOOT AND SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,1912.
Application filed January 24, 1912. Serial No. 673,173.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER H. Srrrz and ABRAHAM Knssnnn, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes, of which the following, is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in boots and shoes, and has for its object the provision of a construction of this character of improved construction and operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, of a shoe embodying our invention, Fig. 2, a side elevation, partially in section, of a. combined sole and heel member employed in the construction, Fig. 3, a bottom plan View of the upper sole member, Fig. 4-, an enlarged detail section of one of the snap fasteners employed in the construction, Fig. 5,'a perspective view of a toe plate employed in the construction, and Fig. 6, a perspective view of a heel clamp employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises an ordinary shoe upper 1 having an upper sole member 2 permanently secured thereto. 1i detachable sole and heel member is made up of the two sole members 3 and 4- and an ordinary heel member 5 permanently secured thereto. A toe plate 6 is permanently secured between sole members 3 and 4t and provided with a flange 7 adapted to engage over the toe portion of the permanent upper sole member 2, as indicated. The plate 6 is provided with snap fastener studs 8 projecting upwardly through sole member 3, as shown. Other snap fastener studs 9 are secured bet-ween members 3 and 4 and project from the upper surface of member 3 to en gage snap fastener sockets 10 which are secured in permanent sole member 2 in proper relation to receive each of the studs 8 and 9. Heel member 5 is provided with a horizontal groove 11 extending entirely around the outside periphery thereof and a substantially U-shaped clamping member 12 is provided with a flange 13 adapted to fit into groove 11 and a flange 14 adapted to take over the heel portion of permanent sole mei'nbor 2, as shown. Clamping member 12 is placed in position by sliding it over the heel portion of the shoe from the rear and is provided with tangs 15 at its forward ends adapted to be bent over the forward edges of heel 5 to hold said clamping member in position.
In use, when it is desired to apply the heel and sole member to the upper, flange 7 is engaged over upper sole member 2 and the combined sole and heel member drawn rearwardly relatively to the upper until studs 8 and 9 register with the corresponding snap sockets 10, whereupon said studs are forced into said sockets. Then clamping member 12 is placed over the heel portion of the shoe by sliding flange 13 into groove 11 from the rear and flange 14- over the rear portion of sole member 2, whereupon said clamping member is secured in position by bending tangs 15 inwardly over the forward edges of the heel member. This will firmly secure the sole and heel member in position on the shoe in such a manner as to be hardly noticeable. \Nhen the sole and heel member become worn or otherwise damaged, they may be removed by first removing clamping member 12 and then detaching from the upper, whereupon a new solo and heel member may be immediately attached,
\Vhile we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for-carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with an upper member of an upper sole member permanently secured to said member; a combined and heel member, there being a horizontal groove in the outer periphery of the heel of said sole and heel member; a substantially U-shaped clamping member provided with flanges adapted to engage in said groove and over said upper sole member and tangs adapted to be bent over the inner edges of said heel; and detachable means for secursolo ing the sole portion of said sole and heel member to said upper sole member, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an upper member of an upper sole member permanently secured to said upper member; a combined sole and heel member, there being a horizontal groove in the outer periphery of the heel of said sole and heel member; a substantially U-shaped clamping member pro-- vided with flanges adapted to engage in said groove and over said upper sole member" and fangs adapted to be bent over the inner edges of the heel; snap fasteners on said upper sole and said sole and heel membersadapted to detachably secure them together; and a plate secured to the toe portion of said sole and heel member and provided with a flange adapted to take over the toe portion of said upper sole, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALEXANDER H. SPITZ. ABRAHAM KESSLER.
WVitnesses JOSHUA R. H. Porrs, HELEN F. LILLIS.
