ANTIOFFSET MECHANISM FOR PRINTING PRESSES.
Application filed March 3, 1925. Serial No. 12,846.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several elements of the anti-offset mechanism whereby 5 the antf-ofiset powder is applied to the side of the traveling offset blanketwhich comes in contact with a freshly printed side of the travelingweb, whereby smutting or sticking of the sheets in the delivery pile is prevented and whereby the effective life of the offset blanket is materially increased.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Fig. 1 represents in side elevation so much of a web perfectin printing press as includes my improve anti-offset mechanism.
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical 2 section through thesame.
printed upon one side of the first printing unit (not shown herein) is represented as passing around the impression cylinder 2 of the second printing 'un1t to be printed onits opposite side. This impression cylinder 2 has its shaft 3 suitably mounted in the frame 4.
The offset blanket 5 leads from the let-off roll 6 around the rolls 7, 8 and 9, to and around the impression cylinder 2 beneath the traveling web 1 in contact with its freshly printed underside; and from thence the olfset blanket 5 leads around the rollslO and 11 to the take-up roll 12 which is driven by the usual rollers 13 and 14 upon which it rests.
Anti-offset powder is applied to the side of,the offset blanket 5 which comes in contact with the first freshly printed side of the traveling web 1 as it passes around the impression cylinder 2. In the present instance I provide an anti-offset powder supply fountain 15, having a fountain roll 16, arranged in position to apply the anti-offset powder directly to the traveling offset blanket 5, whereby the powder is brought 'into direct contact with the first freshly printed side of the traveling web 1.
An adjustable doctor knife 17 is mounted in the fountain 15 in position to regulate the amount of anti-offset owder applied by the fountain roll to the 0 set blanket.
The traveling web, the impression cylindar, the ofiset blanket and the fountain The traveling web 1 which has just been face speed.
It will be seen that by this arrangement I am enabled to apply the anti-offset powder to the side of the offset blanket in regulable quantities for application thereby to the first freshly printed side of the traveling web, thereby not only preventing the sheets cut from the web from smutting in the delivery pile but also preventing the offsetting onto the blanket, thereby-materially the effective life of the blanket.
It is evident that various changes may be r'esorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not intend to limit myself to the particular embodimentv herein shown and described, but
WVh'at I claim is 1. A traveling offset blanket, means for applying anti-offset powder thereto, to revent offset thereon, comprising an anti-o set powder supply fountain and a fountain roll contacting with said blanket, and means for driving the blanket and roll at the same surlengthening 2. A traveling offset blanket, means for applying anti-offset powder to the side of the blanket which-comes in contact with the freshly printed side of a traveling web, said means comprising an anti-offset supply fountain and a fountain roll contacting with said blanket, and means for driving the blanket and roll at the same surface speed.
3. A rotary cylinder, around which a freshly printed web is passed, an offset blanket passing around the cylinder under said we means for applying anti-offset powder to the side of the blanket which comes in contact with the freshly printed side of the web, and means for drivmg the cylinder and blanket at the same surface speed. 1
rotary cylinder, around which a v 4. A freshly printed web is assed, an offset blanket assing around t e cylinder under said wed, I powder to the side of the blanket which comes in cont-act with the freshly printed means for applying anti-offset side of the Web, said means comprising an anti-offset supply fountain and a fountain roll contacting with said blanket, and means for driving the blanket and roll at the same surface speed.
5. A rotary cylinder, around which a freshly printed Web is passed, an offset blanket passing around the cylinder under said Web, means for applying anti-offset powder to the side of the blanket which comes in contact with the freshly printed side of the Web, said means comprising an anti-offset supply fountain and a fountain roll contacting with said blanket, and means for driving the cylinderyblanket and fountain roll at the same surface speed.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 27th day of February A. D. 1925.
- RICHARD J. GREENWVAY.
