Be it known that we, CHARLES L. ENGEL and TALTER S. ENGEL, citizens of the United States, residing at VKansas City, in the `county of Jackson and State ofl Missouri, have invented a certain new `and useful Improvement in fLoose-Ijeaf Books, of which the following is a specification.
Uur invention .relates to improvements in loose leaf books.
It is .particularly Well adapted for use in connection with heavy booksvof record in which theback and ycovers are connected by metal hinges, `and in which the leaves are mounted on'leafsupporting posts arranged to be -freed at either 4end for the insertion or removal 'of leaves.
One of the objectsgof our .invention is to provide novel means "for releasably -supporting both 'ends of the leaf Isupportiing posts, in a manner such that the covers may be freely swung on the metal hinges.
A further object Vof our invention is to provide 'novel means for tei'nporarilylocking thepost holding" members in the post engaging position, toA prevent unauthorized removal of leaves `from `the posts.
A further object of our 'invention' is to provide novel meansfor non-lreleasably'locking the ,post holding members in 'the post engaging position, when it is no longer desired to remove, .insert or change the leaves.
The novel features of our vinvention are hereinafter yfully described and claimed.

The back ofthe book comprises an inner channel `sheet meta-l member 1, provided at Vits longitudinal edges With pintl'e barrels '2, in which are respectively mounted two hinge pintles 3.

Respectively mounted upon the inner sides Aof the cover members 9, are' two inner cover members, which may be vheavy cardboard, and "which may respectively overlap the hingegplates 7 6. Each ofthe latter has trans- -verse `opening-s 11, through which the adja- `cent cover member ifs pressed, lsuch pressed -`portionbeing glued tothe inner side of the adjacent `oputer cover member k9 (see the right cover in 2) thereby securely attaching the cover member `,and 10"(/0 the hinge llO plates 6, without the use of rivets or other accessory Jfastening means.
12 designates two longitudinal tubular members constituting housings in which are respectively slidablymounted two post holding members 13, each of which is provided with longitudinal prongs 14, which are adapted to be extended through the adjacent end portions of arcuate lea'tl supporting posts 15, which extend parallel with each other transversely across the back member 1. Each housing 12, is provided with openings 16, adapted to receive therein, respectively, the adjacent ends of the posts 15.
Each housing 12, is provided with longitudinal barrels 17, through which extends the adjacent pintle 3. By means oi this construction, the housings 12 may be swung on the pintles 3 independently ot the covers.
Each post holding member 13, is longitudinally slidable to and from a position in which the prongs 14, will entend across the openings 16 and through the posts 15.
In Fig. 3, the post holding member 13, is
shown in solid lines in tlie holding position. In Fig. 4, the member 13 is shown withdrawn from the holding` position, to permit the adjacent housing 12 being swung to release the adjacents ends ot the posts 15, to permit the removal from or insertion on the posts of loose leaves 13.
. Each member 13, outside of the adjacent housing, has at one side a transverse groove 19, from which extends laterally an arm 20, which serves as a finger hold or'sliding the member 13 to and 'from the holding position.
To releasably locl post holding member 13, in the holding position, there is pivotally mounted on a transverse pin 21, a locling member 22, in the adjacent housing member 12. The inner end oi each locking member 22, has a lateral arm 23, adapted to engage a shoulder 24, provided on the member 13, in a position such as to be engaged by the arm 23, when the prongs 14 are in the holding position, as shown in solid lines in Fig. 3.
For releasing the locking member from engagement with the shoulder 24, there is provided, Fig. 10, a key 25 having at one end a T-shaped head 26, which is adapted to be inserted through a key hole 27, Fig. 6, of the adjacent housing 12. Ai ter the key has been inserted and turned, and the holding member 13 has Ybeen withdrawn until the member 212 is clear of the shoulder 23, the key will engage the locln ing member 22 at the inner side of the pivot vpin 21, thereby forcing the locking member 22, to the released position, shown in Fig. 4, the holding member 13, may then be withdrawn by means of the arm 20, to the released position, shown in 4, in
which position, the inner end of the locking member 22, will contact with a shoulder 27, provided on the holding member 13, thereby limiting the outward movement of the holding member 13.
Leaves may now be placed on or removed from the posts 15, rthe adjacent housing 12 having been swung outwardly so as to re` lease the posts. After the posts have been reinserted in the housing 12, the withdrawn holding member 13, is forced inwardly, the key 25 having been withdrawn, until a rounded shoulder 28, with which the member 13 is provided engages the adjacent rounded edge ot the locking member 22, as shown in solid lines in Fig. 3. Continued inward i'novement of the memA ber 13 will torce the locking member 22, to the locking position, in which position the arm 23 oit the locking member will be in the path of movement of the shoulder 24, thus preventing any one from withdrawing the prongs 14, from the posts 15, unless such person is provided with a suitable key tor releasing the locking member 22, as above described.
Then it is desired to permanently lock the post holding members 13, in their holding position, so that no one can release the holding members so as to remove or insert leaves, the arm 2O ot each holding member 13, is broken oil1 or bent at the groove 19 into alignment with the body of the member 13, so that the latter can be forced inwardly to the permanently locked position, shown in dotted vlines in Fig. 3
In each housing 12, atitlie end opposite to the end adjacent to the arm 20, is rigidly fastened a locking member 29, which completely fills and closes that end of the housing 12. The inner end of the locking member 29, is provided with a beveled edge 30, which terminates at a shoulder 31, on the locking member 29, which is adapted to be lockingly engaged by a shoulder 32, provided on a resilient arm 33, with which the adjacent end of the holding member 13, is provided. Then the holding member 13 is forced inwardly, from the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 3, the adjacent beveled edge of the arm 33, will have sliding contact with the beveled edge 30, until the shoulder 32 passes and springs into locked engagement with the shoulder 31, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The locking member 13 is then permanently locked in the post holding position and can not be removed from such position.
Eaclrouter cover member 9, has mounted on each end edge and longitudinal outer edge, a lchannel binding member '34, which embraces the outer side of member 9, and a raised portion 35, at the inner side ot said member. The inner edge of each binding member 34, has a longitudinal portion which embraces the inner edge of the adjacent raised portion 35, and which is provided With an inwardly extending flange 37, upon Which rest-s the inner cover member 10. The latter thus serves the double function of fastening the hinge plates 6, and the binding members 34 to the outer eover member 9, Without the use of rivets and similar accessory fastening devices.
Then it is desired to remove sheets from or place them on the posts 15, at either set of ends of the latter, the key 25 is used in the manner as described, to release the desired post holding member 13, from the adjacent looking member 22. After such release, the member 13 is Withdrawn to the position shown in Fig. 4l, after which, the adjacent housing 12 may be swung outwardly, to clear the posts 15, so that the leaves may be placed on the latter or removed therefrom. The housing 12 is then restored to engagement with the posts 15, following which, after removal of the key, the Withdrawn post holding member 13, is again forced to the holding position, shown in solid lines in Fig. 3, in which it will he held by the temporary locking member 22.
We do not limit our invention to the strueture shown and described, as many modifications, Within the scope of the appended claims may be made Without departing from the spirit of our invention.
IVhat We claim is.
1. In a loose leaf book, a housing, a post holding member longitudinally movable in said housing to and from a position in which it is adapted to engage and hold a leaf supporting post, and a temporary locking member pivoted to and in the hnusing and .arranged to be engaged by said post holding member for releasably holding the latter in the holding position and movable' by said post holding member to the locking position with the latter, and adapted, to be released by a key.
2. In a loose leaf book, a housing, having a key hole, a post holding member longitudinally movable in said housing to and from a position in which it is adapted to be engaged by and hold a leaf supporting post and having two shoulders, and a temporary locking member pivoted to and in said housing and adapted to be engaged by one of said shoulders and thereby forced into position for looking engagement With the other of said shoulders for locking the post holding member from being moved from the locking position and adapted to be released from such locked engagement by a key inserted into said key hole.
3. In a loose leaf book, a housing having a solid rigid locking member mounted in and closing one end of said housing, a post holding member longitudinally movable in said housing to and from a position in which it is adapted to engage and hold a leaf supporting post and having a resilient arm i adapted when moved to a permanent locking position to lock with said locking member, and provided with releasable means for holding it from moving to such permanent locking position, and key released means for temporarily locking the post holding member in the post holding position.

In a loose leaf book, a housing having' in one end a rigid immovable locking member closing said end, and having in one side a keyhole, a post holding member longitudinally movable in said housing to and from a position in which it is adapted to engage and hold a leaf supporting post, and provided with a resilient arm adapted to lock with said locking member to hold the post holding member permanently locked, the post holding member having releasable means for being held by the housing from moving to the permanent locking position, and a temporary looking member pivoted in said housing and thereto and arranged to engage and hold the post holding member in the post engaging position and releasable by a key inserted through said key hole.
