I o. HERMANN LOOSE LEAF BINDER Filed March 16, 1925 ZNVENTOR;

, Patented Feb. 2 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO L. HERMANN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO BUX'ION & SKINNER PRINT- ING- AND STATIONERY COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed March 16, 1925. Serial No. 15,933.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro L. HERMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Binder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to loose leaf binders and has for its principal objects a binder in which the several sheets are .mounted upon straight pins, in which the two parts of the binder are easily assembled and separated, and in which a locking means is provided for preventing accidental separation. The invention further consists in the loose leaf binder and in the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In. the accompanying drawing WhlOll forms part of this specification and wherein like reference characters indicate like par wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of'a loose embodying my invention, the two parts of the binder being separated and spread apart;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said binder, the parts being shown in open position;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the binder in the process of being assembled;
- Fig. 4' is a fragmentary side elevation showing the assembled binder;
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and
Figwfl is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 3.
The binder comprises a front cover member 1 and a back cover member 2 to each of which is hingedly secured an end piece 3. Said end pieces 3 are angle members and are hingedly connected together as hereinafter described. Said angle members 3 are preferably of metal and provided with cover pieces 4. To said angle members are secured straight prongs 5 adapted tobe received by the holes of the sheets 6 placed in the binder. The prongs 5 of one end member are staggered with relation to the prongs 5 of the other end member.
At each end, each angle member 3 is provided with an upstanding flange member 7. The flanges of the back cover are provided i with longitudinal slots 8 in.each of which rests a pin 9 on the corresponding flange member 7 of the front cover 1. Thus the flange members 7 and the cover members 1 and 2 are capable of relative movement but cannot be entirely separated.
The end flange member 7 of the front cover member 1 is provided with a rebent longitudinal flange 10 adapted to engage the forward edge of the flange member of the back cover. Thus the flange member 7 (and hence, the cover members) cannot be separated until the front cover member 1 is moved upwardly far enough that the rebent flange 10 of the end flange member thereof can be swung clear of the flange member 7 of the back cover as shown in Figure 2.
When the binder is in open position, as shown in Figure 1, the desired sheets 6 are placed upon the prongs 5 of the back cover "member and then the front cover member 1 leaf binder and its end flange members 7 are swung about the securing pins 9 of the end flange members 7 until the end flange members 7 of the front cover 1 are in vertical position with their rebent longitudinal flanges 10 engaging the edges of the flange members 7 of the back cover, as shown in Figure 3. Then the front cover is moved downwardly into position. The upper corners of the flange members of the back cover are rounded off to facilitate the opening and closing of the binder. In closed position, the sides of the angle members are in contact, thus providing the binder with a strongback.
An elongated locking bar 11 is provided with slots 12 through which extend pins 13 secured to the angle member of the front cover, whereby the locking bar is secured to said angle member, but is capable of limited endwise movement. Preferably said locking bar is provided with a plurality of projec: tions 14 that have frictional engagement with the angle member. At each end the locking bar is provided with projecting tongues 15, each of which has a pin 16 that is adapted to enter alining holes 17 in the struetion, and it permits the use of straight sheet-securing prongs instead of the curved prongs commonly used.
Obviously numerous changes may be made without departing from the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown.
What I claim is:
1. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back covers having end members, upstanding ins on said end members, and upstanding flange members at the ends of said end members connected by slot and pin connections, the flange members of one cover having rebent flanges adapted to engage the forward edges of the flange members of the other cover.
2. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back covers and upstanding flange members at the ends thereof connected by slot and pin connections, the flange members of one cover having rebent flanges adapted to engage the forward edges of the flange members of the other cover, the upper corners of said edges being rounded off whereby said flange members are easily brought into alinement.
3. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back covers, end members secured thereto and upstanding flanges atthe ends of said end members, the upstanding flanges of one member having slots extending the greater part of the length thereof and the upstanding flanges of the other member having pins extending into said slots, and the flanges of one member having rebent flanges adapted to engage the forward edges of the other flanges.
4. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back covers, end members secured thereto and upstanding flanges at the ends of said end members, the upstanding flanges of one member having slots extending the greater part of the length thereof, and the upstanding flanges of the other member having pins extending into said slots, and the flanges of one member having rebent flanges adapted to engage the forward edges of the other flanges, the upper corners of said edges being rounded olt' to facilitate assembling.
5. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back covers, hinge members adapted to overlap when the binder is assembled, and a locking bar having locking pins at each end adapted to extend through alining holes in said hinge members to maintain the binder in assembled position.
6. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back covers, hinge members adapted to overlap when the binder is assembled, and a locking bar having locking pins at each end adapted to extend through alining holes in said hinge members to maintain the binder in assembled position, said locking bar having raised portions that frictionally engage a portion of one of said covers.
Signed at St. Louis, Missouri, this 14 day of March, 1925.
OTTO L. HERMANN.
