T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JAN KoLArrowsKI, citizen of Poland, residing at Hegewisch, in the county of Cook and State of Illino1s, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has as one of its objects the provision of an amusing toy, shaped and operated in the manner of a spinning top and capable of emitting musical sounds.
A further purpose is to provide a toy, that is cheap to construct and substantially indestructible in its nature, all of its moving,
sound producing elements being enclosed in a rigid casing. I
These objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming an essential part of this disclosure, and, in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectionalview taken on the line 11 of FigureB.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a top made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken approximately through the center of the same.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view showing a complete assemblage of the toy.
In the several views the numeral 10 is used to designate a cylindrical casing having heads 11 and 12 at its respective ends, these heads being secured permanently by solder or the like after assembling the interior parts.
Fixed axially in these heads is a spindle 14, its lower, conically pointed end 15 acting as the support for the top when it is whirled or rotated, the point resting on any convenient level surface.
Formed with the upper head 11 is a flanged drum 16 upon which the actuating pull cord 17 is initially wound and extending through the drum is the upper end of thespindle 14. the same passing loosely through a handle 18, readily detached when the casing and drum are released from the cord. the point 15 alone supporting the parts, which continue to rotate due to their acquired momentum.
A ring 20 is secured interiorly of the cylinder, near its lower end, and a series of unevenly spaced lugs 21 extend inwardly and upwardly fromthe ring.

tending to a uniform height within the cylinder, these reeds being capable of emitting musical sounds when caused to vibrate, the sounds varying in tone or pitch and intensity according to the thickness and density of the reeds, producing a cadence, when struck in sequence.
Secured on the spindle 14 are a pair of collars 23, having between them a hub 24 from which radiate arms 25 carrying at their extremities striking plates or vanes 26, their lowest points being adjusted to make the merest contact with the upper ends of the reeds 22.
These plates present considerable area and are acted upon by an air current entering the casing through tangentially formed slot 27 in such manner as to cause the plates,
arms and hub to rotate on the spindle in a the handle and cord both becoming free from the device.
As the casing revolves, air enters the slot and impinging on the vanes, causes them to move and strike the reeds setting up a vibration in them sufiicient to produce audible sounds.
Having thus described my invention, to gether with the manner of its construction and operation. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A musical top comprising a cylindrical casing having heads at each end, an'axial spindle passing longitudinally through said casing, means for rotatingsaid casing, a ring fixed in. said casing. a plurality of reeds fixed to said ring, and means revoluble on said spindle for making contact with said reeds, said means being actuated by an air current entering a tangential slot in said casing.
2. A musical top comprising a cylindrical casingclosed at its ends and having an axial spindle passing therethrough, a drum aflixed to said casing having a cord wound upon it. a demountable handle loosely engaging said spindle, an armed vane carrying hubrevolu-r ble on said spindle opposite a tangential slot in said casing, and a plurality of unspindle, a plurally vaned hub rotatable between said collars, a ring in said casing havings lugs arranged in unlike spaced relation, musical reeds of varying timbre fixed to said lugs, the ends of said reedsextending into the path of rotation of said vanes, and means for causingsaid vanes to rotate in a direction opposite to that of said casing.
In witness whereof I afiix my signature. 20
JAN KOLANOWSKI.
