Be it known that I, OLWE V. CAMP, a

Citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Catamenial Sacks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to imp-rove catamenial sacks by the provision of a simple, inexpensive, easily applied and efficient protective covering, designed to be worn over a period napkin with a view to preventing soiling of underwear, and one that is cool and sanitary and comfortable.

I contemplate making the protective covering in two sizes, medium and large, the large size for hospital use and for the use of very large women.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention Consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a plan view of my novel protective covering per se.

Figure 2 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a transverse section showing the covering combined with a folded nappin or gauze lling to form a catamenial sack.

Figure 4. is a detail view showing the manner in which an ordinary safety pin is em ployed to connect the coveringpo-rtions at each end of the sack.

Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawing.

The filling of the catan'ienial sack, which may be a folded period napkin or folded gauze or other absorbent material, is designated by 1 in Figure 3, while my novel protective covering as a-whole is designated b 2.

yAmong other elements the protective covering comprises a sheet 3 of thin and soft and flexible vulcanized rubber or equivalent material, the side edges being turned over as at 4, and vulcanized. The sheet 8 is bifurcated at its ends as designated by 6, and its portions 7 at opposite sides of the bifurcations are preferably, though not necessarily, of double thickness for the sake of increased strength. Each of the said portions 7 is provided with an eyelet 8. In the sheet 3 is a longitudinally centrally elongated opening 9, surrounded at the outer side of the Covering, by a head 10 which is rounded or of circular cross section and is preferably, though not necessarily, integral with the sheet 3;

Two ordinary safety pins are designed to be used in conjunction withthe filling 1 and protective covering 2, one of the said safe-ty pins being shown in Figure 4.-, and designated by 11.

As will be readily understood from Figures 1 and 2, my novel protective covering is very compact, and may be carried in a package of small compass; also, the outwardly curved side portions of the covering serve, when the covering is on a folded napkin or other absorbent lling, to prevent blood from passing through the covering. The bead 10 of the covering serves effectively in preventing discomfort to the person wearing the catamenial sack of which the covering forms a part.

In the practical use of my novel protective covering it is folded abo-ut a soft filling 1 in the manner shownin Figure 3, with the Opening 9 above the filling 1 so as to enable the menstrual discharge to reach and be absorbed by the said filling. The end portions 7 of the covering are connected by safety pins as 11 which are passed through the eyelets 8, and also through a portion of the filling 1, the latter to hold the lling yagainst endwise movement relative to the covering. In this connection, it will loe understood that when the end portions 7 are connected by two safety pins, one pin to each pair of end portions 7, the longitudinal or side edges ofthe covering will be tightly held in lapped relation at the underside or outer side of the filling, and hence will prevent the passage of blood.

I have entered into a detailed description Of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment ofthe invention, in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention, various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my'invention as defined in my appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A protective covering for use as part of a catamenial sack, formed of soft and flexible Water-proof material, and having a longitudinal central elongated opening and outwardly curved longitudinal or side edges, and also having bifurcations in'its ends and eyelets upon opposite sides of said bifurcations.

2. A protective covering for use as part of a catamenial sack, formed of soft and flexible Water-proof material and having a longitudinal central elongated opening and outwardly curved longitudinal or side edges and also having bifurcations in its ends and eyelets upon opposite sides of said bifurcations; the said longitudinal central elonside of the covering, and the longitudinal or side edges being reinforced by turning these edges over and vulcanizing. the same to the body.
