KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH T MITGHELL, BOTH OF LEAVEN- EOBBYI-IORSE TEICYCLE.
Application filed May 10, 1923. Serial No. 638,082.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A; REED,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in thecounty of Leavenworth h and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hobbyhorse Tricycle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy vehicles of m the occupant propelled velocipede type and the primary object of the invention is to provide a novel velocipede having a figure thereon shaped to simulate an animal rockably mounted with novel means for rock- 1 ing the figure during a movement of the velocipede.
Another prime object of the invention is to provide a combined tricycle and hobby horse, the hobby horse being operatively connected to the driving mechanism of the tricycle, whereby when the tricycle is in operation, the hobby horse will be moved back and forth to simulate the galloping motion of a live animal.
A further prime object of this invention is to provide a tricycle embodying a novel frame supporting at its forward end a steering wheel and at its rear end a drive axle and drive wheels, the frame intermediate the steering wheel and thedrive axle and drive wheels supporting foot pedals having operative connection with the drive axle, the frame also supporting a pivoted figure shaped to simulate the appearance of a horse, the drive axle having means connected with the figure for rocking the same during rotation of the axle by the foot pedals.
Another prime object of the invention is to provide novel means for permitting the adjusting of the velocipede to allow different sized children to ride on the same.
A still further object of the improved velocipede is to provide a device of this character, which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be laced upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved combined hobby-horse and tricycle.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same.
Figure 3 is, a plan view of the improved combined hobby-horse and tricycle.
Figure 4 is a view showing detail perspectives of various parts of the combined hobby-horse and tricycle. I 1
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved combined hobby-horse and velocipede or tricycle which embodies a frame B, driving mechanism C and the hobby-horse arrangement D.
The frame B includesa main supporting structure 5 and a subsupporting structure 15 for the seat 16 for the user and drive pedal arrangement 17 The main supporting structure 5 comprises an angle-shaped bar 6 including the rearwardly extending and downwardly inclined bar 7 and the upwardly and for wardly inclined bar 8. The forward end of the bar 8 supports a sleeve or bearing 9 for rotatably receiving the post 10 of the steering fork 11- which carries 'an axle 12 on which is mounted a steering wheel 13. The lower end of the bar 7 supports a yoke 1 1-, the terminals of the arms of which carry bearings 20 for rotatably supporting the drive crank shaft 21. The terminals of the drive crank shaft 21 have connected thereto in any preferred manner the ground drive wheels 22. It is preferred to have the ground wheels 22 spaced a relatively great distance apart, so that a relatively large spread will be had in order to prevent the easy tipping over of the tricycle. I
lVhile the improved main supporting structure 5 can be made in any preferred way and of any desired material, as shown, the same consists of a fiat bar bent back upon itself and shaped to provide the sleeve or bearing 9 and the yoke 14. This is clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The substructure 15 embodies parallel side bars 25 which are connected together at edlti'ttd,
their upper ends by means of a bridge 26 which supports a hollow boss 27 for slidably receiving the post 28 of the saddle or seat 16 of the velocipede. This seat is held in an adjusted position by means of a set screw 30 which extends into the boss 27 and impinges against the post. 28. The parallel side bars have their lower terminals offset as at 31 and are provided with bearing openings 32 for receiving the foot crank 33 of the drive pedal arrangement 17. The foot pedals 34: are preferably adjustably connected to the arms of the foot crank 33 so as to adjust the throw thereof. This substructure 15 is riveted or otherwise secured to the main structure 5 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing and it can be seen that the foot crank is disposed between the steering wheel 13 and the drive wheels 22 as heretofore stated. The post 10 of the steering yoke 11 has preferably adjustably connected thereto the handle bars 35 so as to permit the raising and lowering thereof and thus permit the use of the velocipede for different sized children.
The drive means C for the velocipede preferably consists of a pair of sprocket wheels 36 and 37 respectively which are connected by a drive chain 38. These sprocket wheels thereof is cut out to communicate with the hollow interior of the body by means of a slot 40 and'the upper end of the substructpre 15 is adapted to protrude through said s 0t.
The figure can be rocked back and forth while the tricycle is in motion by any preferred means, and as shown I provide a pitman rod i1 which is connected to the throw portion 4-2 of the crank shaft 21 and to the figure D by means of a pivot belt or the like f2. It is to be noted that the pivot bolt 4:2 is arranged forwardly of the pivot bolt 39 upon which the figure is rockably mounted and it thus can be seen that when the tricycle is being operated by the user that the horse will be rocked back and forth giving a life like appearance thereto.
From the foregoing descrnption it can be seen that an exceptionally simple and attractive tricycle has been provided having a novel rocking hobby-horse connected thereto.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention.
What I claim as new is:
' The combination with a tricycle embodying a frame including a main supporting structure, a steering wheel rotatably carried by the forward end of the supporting structure, a drive crank shaft rotatably carried by the rear end of the supporting structure, drive wheels secured to the drive shaft, a subsupporting structure secured to the main supporting structure at a point intermediate its ends, a seat carried by the subsupporting structure, a rotatable foot operated crank carried by the subsupporting structure, means operatively connecting the drive crank shaft with the foot operated crank, of a figure shaped to simulate the appearance of a horse mounted upon the frame, a pivot bolt rockably connecting the figure to the main supporting structure at a point inter mediate its ends, and a pitman rod mounted upon the throw portion of the crank shaft and operatively connected to the figure at a point in advance of the pivot bolt.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. REED. lVitnesses JOSEPH VVILLIAMs, Jr., F RANGIS DAVIS.
