To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. HoRNIe, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Jersey City,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Velocipede, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in velocipedes, an object of the invention being to provide a velocipede which is propelled by means of a crank shaft constituting the rear axle and to which motion is imparted by the movement of the body and the legs of the rider.
A further object is to provide a velocipede which in the action of propulsion requires the rider to simulate the motions which occur during horseback riding.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated which will give healthful exercise to the muscles and which will amuse and entertain children of any age.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arran ements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the acompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
1 represents the front, and 2 the rear wheels of the velocipede. The front wheel 1 supports a fork 3 having handle bars 4 at its upper end.
The rear wheels 2 are secured to a crank axle 5, and a frame bar 6 is secured at its forward end to a sleeve 7 on fork 3 and at its rear end is forked as shown at 8 and supported on the rear axle 5.
A lever 9 is projected through a slot 10 in the bar 6 and pivotally supported therein by a pin 11.
The rear end of lever 9 is connected by a ink 12 with a crank arm 13 on axle 5 and ;he front end of the lever 9 is connected by a rod 14 with a treadle 15. The treadle 15 is pivotally connected to depending perforated lugs 16 on the ends of the fork 8.
The connection between rod 14 and treadle 15, is preferably rendered adjustable in any approved manner, and it is to be understood that the velocipede will be made in all sizes to suit the trade.
A seat or saddle 17 is secured on the lever 9 in rear of its pivot 11.
The operation is as follows:
The rider straddles lever 9 and sits on saddle 17 with his feet resting on treadle 15. He steers the machine with his hands on the handle bars 4:.
By moving the body downwardly and rearwardly and upwardly and forwardly and imparting an up and down movement to the treadle, the rear crank axle 5 is caused to turn and the machine propelled.
The motion of the body is very similar to the motion of tile body in horseback riding and the muscles are brought into play both of the body and legs, so that while the sport is exhilarating it also results in healthfully exercising the muscles, which is most beneficial to children.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and al terations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A velocipedc, comprising front and rear wheels, a crank axle connecting the rear wheels, a front fork on the front wheel, a
frame bar connecting the front fork and rear axle, a lever positioned across the frame bar, pivotally connected between its ends to said frame bar, and projecting at its respective ends below and above the frame bar, a seat on the rear portion of the lever, a link connecting the rear end of the lever with the crank axle, a forwardly projecting treadle pivotally connected at its rear end to said frame bar, and a rod connecting the forward ends of the lever and the treadle.
2. A velocipede, comprising front and rear wheels, a crank axle connecting the rear wheels, a front fork on the front wheel, a longitudinally slotted frame bar connecting the front fork and rear axle, a lever positioned through the slotted portion of the frame bar and pivotally, connected between its ends to the frame bar and normally inclining downwardly from its rear to the forward end, a seaton the rear portion of the lever, a link connecting the rear end of the'lever with the crank axle, projecting treadle pivotally connected at its rear end to said frame bar, and a rod connecting thefforward ends of the lever and treadle.
